Planet Zoo 2 Animals, All 136 Species by Region

Planet Zoo 2 has 136 species at launch, according to Frontier's own Zoopedia: 130 in the base game and 6 in the Deluxe Edition. This Planet Zoo 2 animal list sorts every one of them by continent and ocean. It shows what you get at launch, and which fan favorites didn't make the cut.

Our Planet Zoo 2 review called the animals the strongest part of the sequel. Fish, sharks, and free-flying birds now join the land animals for the first time in the series.

Below, you'll find the full roster by region, the new aquatic and flying species, and the six Deluxe animals.

Planet Zoo 2 Animals Summary

  • 136 species are in the official Zoopedia: 130 base game and 6 Deluxe.

  • The roster splits into 57 Terrestrial, 12 Flying, 37 Aquarium, and 46 Exhibit species, and 16 fish fit both aquariums and exhibits.

  • Asia (47) and Africa (44) lead the continent tags. South America (14) and Oceania (8) trail far behind.

  • Planet Zoo 2 aquatic animals include sharks, rays, tuna, a manatee, and the hawksbill turtle.

  • The Planet Zoo 2 Deluxe Edition animals are the golden eagle, golden lion tamarin, great hammerhead, axolotl, blue and gold fusilier, and longfin batfish.

How Many Animals Are In Planet Zoo 2?

Planet Zoo 2 has 136 animal species at launch. The official Planet Zoo 2 Zoopedia lists all 136, and its content pack filter splits them into 130 base game species and 6 Deluxe species.

Counts posted online before launch ranged from 121 to 130, since Frontier only revealed the last 12 species in early October. The Zoopedia still carries a work-in-progress label, so stats and descriptions can change with patches.

By habitat type, you get 57 Terrestrial animals, 12 Flying birds, 37 Aquarium species and 46 Exhibit animals. The total passes 136 since 16 fish can live in either an aquarium or an exhibit tank.

Planet Zoo 2 Animals By Continent

Planet Zoo 2 Animals By Continent

The Zoopedia tags each species with every region it lives in. By tag, Asia has 47 species, Africa 44, Europe 22, North America 17, South America 14 and Oceania 8. The Pacific holds 28, the Indian Ocean 26 and the Atlantic 5. The polar filters barely register: the mountain hare is the only Arctic animal, and the moon jelly is the only species tagged to the Arctic and Southern Oceans.

Each species appears once in the table below, and wide-ranging animals such as the golden eagle get their own row.

Planning an Australia and New Guinea build? Oceania is the clearest gap, with four exclusive species, and the Goodfellow's tree-kangaroo is the only marsupial on the whole roster. South America has eight, one of them the Deluxe golden lion tamarin. The capybara, jaguar and cheetah are missing entirely.

Aquatic And Flying Species Are New

Planet Zoo 2 is the first game in the series with fully aquatic and flying species, as Frontier's store copy puts it. The aquarium list has 37 species. 21 of them live only in aquariums, including the blacktip reef shark, Pacific bluefin tuna, ocean sunfish, West Indian manatee and hawksbill turtle.

These Planet Zoo 2 aquatic animals go into freshwater or saltwater tanks you build yourself. The other 16 fish can also go into an exhibit, which suits a koi or clownfish display. The moon jelly is the odd one out, an Exhibit animal with no Aquarium listing.

The 12 Flying species are the golden eagle, white-tailed sea-eagle, white-backed vulture, secretarybird, shoebill, greater flamingo, Eurasian bittern, great hornbill, toco toucan, long-eared owl, Javan green magpie and long-tailed parakeet. They fly free inside aviaries built from barriers, poles and mesh covers.

The Six Deluxe Edition Animals

The Six Deluxe Edition Animals

The Planet Zoo 2 Deluxe Edition animals come from the Deluxe Upgrade Pack, which adds six species and exclusive animal signs. The Deluxe Edition bundles that pack with the base game.

Sorted by habitat, you get the golden eagle (Flying), golden lion tamarin (Terrestrial), great hammerhead (Aquarium), axolotl (Exhibit), blue and gold fusilier (Aquarium or Exhibit) and longfin batfish (Aquarium). Three of the six go into water, so aquarium builders feel the pack most.

South America builders will miss the golden lion tamarin most, since the base game leaves that continent seven exclusive species. Shark fans still get the blacktip reef shark, sand tiger shark and Indo-Pacific leopard shark without it.

FAQs About Planet Zoo 2 Animals

How many animals are in Planet Zoo 2?

The official Zoopedia lists 136 species, 130 in the base game and 6 in the Deluxe Upgrade Pack.

Which continent has the most species in the Planet Zoo 2 animal list?

Asia leads with 47 tagged species, just ahead of Africa with 44. Oceania has the fewest at 8.

Are there sharks in Planet Zoo 2?

Yes, four. Three are in the base game, and the great hammerhead is Deluxe only.

Is the capybara in Planet Zoo 2?

No. The capybara, jaguar, and cheetah are all missing from the launch roster.

Final Words

The roster is lopsided. Africa and Asia can each fill a themed zoo alone, and a South American or Australian park runs out of animals fast. Water helps more than the continent count suggests. More than a quarter of the list lives in tanks, so a reef or coastal build can carry a zoo where the land options are thin. We'd start a first sandbox park there.

Behavior matters as much as the headcount. Frontier says it is still working on animals climbing, escaping and using their enrichments, and climbers were the buggiest part of launch in our review too.

Frontier has also said Planet Zoo 2 will keep growing with more species. Nobody outside the studio knows which ones yet, so the thing to watch is whether the first new animals land in South America and Oceania.
