Planet Zoo 2 Game Modes, Which One Should You Play First?

Planet Zoo 2 game modes come in three flavors, and the one you open first decides how your opening week feels. Career mode walks you through the systems, Sandbox hands you every tool at once, and Franchise mode plugs you into an online market with other players.

Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026, and Frontier shipped patch 1.0.4 a day later, with several fixes aimed at Franchise. In our Planet Zoo 2 review, the modes section landed on one verdict: Career teaches, Franchise stumbles.

The short answer is to start with Career if you're new to the series. Go straight to Franchise only if you know the first Planet Zoo well and want to trade with other players. Below, we break down how each mode works and what 1.0.4 changed.

Planet Zoo 2 Game Modes Summary

  • Planet Zoo 2 game modes: Career, Sandbox, and Franchise.

  • Career mode runs offline across 18 levels in four chapters, with you as FEN's new Conservation Coordinator.

  • Sandbox opens every animal and region from the start and ties into the Frontier Workshop.

  • Franchise mode needs online access and runs on cash plus Conservation Credits, with a five-tier Accreditation ladder.

  • Start with Career if you're new. Veterans of the first game can go straight to Franchise.

Career Mode Teaches The Systems

Planet Zoo 2 Career mode casts you as the new Conservation Coordinator at FEN, the Fauna and Ecosystems Network. Frontier's Planet Zoo 2 game modes page describes it as a trip around the planet, with a cast of characters along the way. It runs offline.

The campaign spans 18 levels across four chapters, from the Great Rift Valley to South East Wales, the Scottish Highlands, the Swiss Alps and Singapore. Most levels hand you a set problem, such as debt or a cramped plot, and objectives introduce mechanics gradually. Medals from earlier levels open the later ones.

In play, Career is where breeding, welfare and the release loop click into place before money gets tight. The objectives are tidy, though we wanted more story holding them together. Each level awards Bronze, Silver and Gold medals, so you can settle for Bronze, move on and come back for Gold later.

Sandbox Is For Builders

Planet Zoo 2 Sandbox drops progression entirely. Every animal and region is available from the first minute, and you pick the simulation and challenge level before the gates open.

The Frontier Workshop is the other half of Sandbox. You can download community blueprints and whole zoos, including creations from players on other platforms.

For builders, this is the calmest place to learn the construction tools. Switch off cash, drop a downloaded habitat into your park, and study its paths and barriers. Patch 1.0.4 also cut default angle snapping from 15 degrees to 1, which makes fine placement far less fiddly.

How Planet Zoo 2 Franchise Mode Works

How Planet Zoo 2 Franchise Mode Works

Planet Zoo 2 Franchise mode is the online layer, and it requires a connection. You run an international network of linked zoos and Wildlife Reserves, trade habitat animals with other players, and chip in on Community Challenges that Frontier runs for the whole player base.

The economy uses two currencies: cash from guests and Conservation Credits. Credits come from releasing animals to the wild (rarer and more endangered species pay more), Community Challenge rewards, greeting VIP visitors who stand in for other players, and selling animals on the market. Credits pay for many animal purchases and for opening a second zoo.

Progress runs through Accreditation, a five-tier ladder that adds species as you climb. Career raises Accreditation through medals, and Franchise ties it to zoo reputation and reserves instead. Tier 2 asks for one zoo at 3 Reputation Stars. The top tier wants two 3-star zoos plus three Wildlife Reserves at 3 Biodiversity Stars, and it holds the largest flagship animals.

At launch, the trading pool was close to empty, and research needed a reserve and bred animals first. The Update 1.0.4 patch notes give players more access to initial trading volumes, fix juvenile shoal trading, and correct bugs in Community Challenge information and rewards. At the time of writing, Frontier hasn't published a full breakdown of market rules, fees, or listing limits.

Which Mode Should You Start With?

Start with Career if you're new to Frontier's management games. It teaches the systems gradually, works offline, and lets you replay levels for better medals.

Veterans who want trading

Planet Zoo veterans can jump straight into Franchise, with modest expectations for the first weeks. Early player guides report that bred animals reach a higher maximum rating than bought ones, and that credit-bought animals can't be released to the wild. Breeding early pays off more than buying.

Sandbox suits anyone who mostly wants to build. Test a habitat layout there first, then spend real credits on it in Franchise.

FAQs About Planet Zoo 2 Game Modes

Does Planet Zoo 2 Franchise mode need an internet connection?

Yes. Franchise is the only mode that requires online access. Career and Sandbox both work offline.

How many levels does Planet Zoo 2 Career mode have?

Career has 18 levels split across four chapters. Each level opens with a medal from an earlier one.

How do you earn Conservation Credits in Planet Zoo 2?

Release animals to the wild, complete Community Challenges, greet VIP visitors, and sell animals on the Franchise market. Releases through a Wildlife Reserve let you track how the animals do afterward.

Is there a Challenge mode in Planet Zoo 2?

No. Frontier lists three modes: Career, Sandbox, and Franchise. Community Challenges are the closest match, and they live inside Franchise.

Final Words

The three modes feed each other more than the menu suggests. Career teaches the release loop, and Sandbox lets you rehearse builds with money switched off. Franchise is where both skills finally cost something.

Franchise will decide how Planet Zoo 2 is remembered. The market only works when enough players list animals, and launch week showed how thin that pool can get.

Watch the next patch notes for an official word on trading rules, fees, and limits. Until then, keep a Sandbox save for experiments and treat early Franchise as a long-term project.
