Planet Zoo 2 Wildlife Reserves, How to Release Your Animals

Planet Zoo 2 wildlife reserves are the biggest new system in Planet Zoo 2, and they give the animals you breed somewhere to go. You repair damaged land outside your zoo, set up research equipment, and release animals in groups that meet each species' requirements.
In our Planet Zoo 2 review, the reserves gave breeding a goal. Frontier lays out the system in its Creature Feature on Wildlife Reserves.
Below, you'll find how to release your animals, from the first cleanup to the first Release Group.
Planet Zoo 2 Wildlife Reserves Summary
Clean the land first. Clear pollutants and invasive plants, then get water, foliage and terrain right for each ecosystem.
Build a Research Network around a Research Outpost, which comes with the Planet Zoo 2 Research Vehicle.
Research the species in your zoo. Release Group details usually appear at research level 4.
Breed a matching Release Group. Requirements can cover longevity, fertility or genetic diversity.
Release prey before predators into a reserve with the right ecosystems, and watch the Biodiversity Rating climb.
What Are Planet Zoo 2 Wildlife Reserves?

Wildlife reserves are large wild maps outside your zoo where you restore ecosystems and release animals you bred at home. In the first Planet Zoo, a released animal simply left and paid out Conservation Credits. Here you can follow the group into the wild.
Each reserve has a set number of ecosystems to build, such as watering holes in grassland or lowland marshes in broadleaf areas. Released animals fill ecological roles there, like rooting in soil, browsing trees or hunting. Filling those roles raises the reserve's Biodiversity Rating, a major factor in its five-star overall score.
Reserve | Region | Biome | Example species |
|---|---|---|---|
Great Rift Valley | Africa | Grassland | Lion |
Tanzania | Africa | Grassland | Common Ostrich, Thomson's Gazelle |
Sumatra | Asia | Tropical | Sumatran Tiger, Sumatran Orangutan |
Poland | Europe | Temperate | European Bison |
Scottish Highland | Europe | Taiga | Red Deer, Golden Eagle |
Sweden | Europe | Taiga | Eurasian Brown Bear |
Frontier has shown Sumatra, the Great Rift Valley and the Scottish Highland reserve, and we played Sumatra and Sweden for our review. The other names come from player guides, so treat the six-reserve list as unconfirmed. Every reserve opens from the Planet Hub, which also handles animal trading, storage and research.
Restoring The Land With The Nature Brush
An ecosystem can't support animals until you've cleaned it up. Start by clearing pollutants and invasive plants, then get water, foliage and terrain right for the habitat you're building. Our Sumatran Rainforest started on ground scarred by mining.
We painted the undergrowth back in with the Nature Brush. Each ecosystem has its own requirements for size, fauna and water level.
Clear pollution and invasive plants early. Both pull the reserve's rating down, and removing them only gets harder later.
Research Outposts, Camera Traps And The Research Vehicle
A Research Outpost sits at the core of every reserve's Research Network, and it comes with its own Research Vehicle. Around it you place monitoring equipment, from premade Blueprints or your own designs.
Equipment | What it records |
|---|---|
Observation Platforms | Visual sightings of the environment and released animals |
Acoustic Monitors | Audio from the reserve's species |
Camera Traps | Footage of the reserve's species |
The studio says you need the network to raise the Biodiversity Rating and to make more species releasable. Reserves also earn Conservation Credits, the currency behind Planet Zoo 2 conservation, and open higher levels of species research.
Spread Camera Traps and Acoustic Monitors across different areas, as research progress rises with coverage. The Research Vehicle covers ground faster than walking and reaches spots you can't get to on foot.
How To Release Animals Into A Reserve

Research the species. For most animals, Release Group details show up at research level 4.
Breed the right group. Release Groups range from a single animal to breeding pairs and larger family groups, some with set numbers of males and females.
Meet the requirements. Frontier says these can include longevity, fertility or genetic diversity, and they change by species and group.
Match the reserve. Each species lists the reserve ecosystems it needs before it can be released there.
Confirm and follow it. Once released, the group passes milestones you can follow from the reserve.
Got a lion pride ready? Hold it until the grassland has enough prey. Predators often can't go in before the herbivores, and a reserve of only grazers barely moves its rating.
Each release runs through several menus and a cutscene, which felt slow by our third group. Update 1.0.4, out October 14, fixed Wildlife Reserve animals teleporting and a Conservation Credit reward bug in Franchise mode.
FAQs About Planet Zoo 2 Wildlife Reserves
Final Words
Reserves change what your zoo is for. Breeding finally has a destination, so pick the Release Group first and build the zoo habitat around it.
Research is the slow part. A species without Release Group details is a dead end for any reserve, so start researching your target animals early.
The launch reserve list is short, and we'd still like threats to manage or wild populations that change between visits. Frontier's 1.0.4 notes put animal navigation, climbing and habitat escapes next, with no word on new reserves yet.
