League of Legends Briar Guide: Abilities and Build

League of Legends Briar Guide: Abilities and Build

She's got white hair with pink highlights, a massive iron collar locked around her neck, and an appetite that literally cannot be controlled. Briar is one of the most distinctive champions Riot Games has ever added to League of Legends, and she plays just as wild as she looks.

This odd, blank-eyed champion is a bit of a paradox: easy to pick up but hard to control, making her extremely beginner-friendly yet also confusing. And that is by design; that’s why we wrote this article to help you out a bit, and if that isn’t enough, some players purchase a LoL account to give themselves a bit of a leg up. Of course, the best way to improve is simply playing the game and practicing.

Regardless, this guide covers everything you need to know about Briar: who she is, how her kit works, her optimal build, and how to play her in-game.

Who Is Briar?

LoL Briar Battle Academia Skin

A failed experiment by the Black Rose, Briar was created through hemomancy (blood magic) as a living weapon designed to hunt down enemies of Noxus. The plan fell apart fast. Her hunger for blood was so absolute that she couldn't tell friend from foe once the frenzy kicked in, so the Black Rose locked her in a pillory fastened with a hemolith gemstone to keep her mind focused enough to function. After years of confinement, she broke free, and now she wanders the streets of Noxus following only her hunger for knowledge and blood. The Black Rose is still watching. Briar doesn't care as long as they don’t stop her from expanding her knowledge and maybe making a friend or two.

In League of Legends, Briar is a Fighter/Assassin Champion classified as Low difficulty. She is a Jungler, and her whole design revolves around one thing: going absolutely feral on whoever she locks onto. What makes her fun and occasionally terrifying is that her core mechanic is literally losing control. Playing Briar is less about executing a precise rotation and more about reading the map, picking your moment, and then going completely off.

Briar's Abilities

LoL Briar Abilities Icons

Understanding Briar's kit is key to getting value out of her. Each ability plays into the same core fantasy: get in, deal damage, heal back everything you lose, and get out on your own terms.

Crimson Curse (Passive)

Every attack and ability Briar uses applies a stacking bleed to the target. That bleed deals physical damage and heals Briar for a portion of what it deals, and the less health she has, the more she heals.

The catch? She has zero base health regeneration. None. Every bit of recovery comes from hitting things, which means she has to stay active and aggressive to stay alive. Not helping is the fact that her abilities cost health to cast.

Head Rush

Briar leaps at a target, stuns them briefly, deals physical damage, and reduces their armor. Clean, reliable, and builds into combos naturally. It's her primary gap-closer and CC tool, and against walls, it applies even more pressure. Nice, simple, effective.

Blood Frenzy/Snack Attack

This is the one. Briar shatters her pillory and enters a full Blood Frenzy, charging at the nearest enemy, gaining bonus attack speed and move speed, an uncancellable windup, as well as dealing AoE damage around her target. She doesn't get to pick who she chases. The frenzy picks for her, but she does prioritize Champions.

While frenzied, she can activate "Snack Attack" by recasting this ability, biting her current target for big bonus damage and healing herself for 5% of her maximum health plus a percentage of the damage dealt. This is her main burst tool and sustain engine in one.

Chilling Scream

Briar pulls her pillory back on and charges up a scream, gaining damage reduction and healing herself while she charges. She can release it early or let it run its full duration, and the longer she holds it, the more damage and range it gets. Enemies hit are slowed, and a fully charged scream knocks them back. If they collide with terrain during that knockback, they take bonus damage and get knocked up and stunned. This ability ends her frenzy state, giving her a way to pump the brakes when she needs to reposition or disengage.

The interaction between Blood Frenzy and Chilling Scream takes some getting used to. You can't be frenzied and screaming at the same time, so knowing when to bail out of frenzy versus staying in it is one of the core decisions Briar players make constantly.

Certain Death

Briar kicks her hemolith gemstone in the targeted direction, and she targets the first champion hit by it. She flies to the location of her marked target, fears all non-marked nearby enemies on arrival, and immediately enters a supercharged frenzy state that locks her onto her marked target until one of them is dead. She gains all of the effects of Blood Frenzy, plus bonus armor, magic resist, immunity to crowd control, life steal, and additional bonus move speed during this state.

This ability can flip games. A well-placed Certain Death can launch Briar across the map to catch an overextended carry, which is one of the most satisfying plays in the game. A badly placed one, such as landing in the middle of five enemies, is a quick trip back to base.

Briar Build

Building Briar correctly is what separates a Briar who melts through the enemy team from a Briar who melts herself. Her kit rewards sticking to the fight, so the build doubles down on that.

Recommended Runes for Briar

Briar's rune setup is all about stacking advantages in the extended fights she wants to be in. Press the Attack is the overwhelming pick, and the rest of the Precision tree feeds directly into her sustain and kill pressure. While Domination gives her the lethality and extra gold she needs to spike early.

Description

Press the Attack

LoL Press The Attack Rune Icon

Attack a champion three consecutive times. The third attack deals bonus adaptive damage and grants 8% increased damage against that target for as long as you stay in combat with them.

Synergizes directly with Briar's AoE frenzy attacks and bleed stacks. The most picked keystone by a wide margin.

Triumph

LoL Triumph Rune Icon

Restores health on takedowns and grants a gold bonus. The restored health is equal to 2,5% of maximum health + 5% of missing health.

This rune keeps Briar topped up after picking off targets and chaining into the next fight.

Alacrity

LoL Alacrity Rune Icon

Gain 3% attack speed plus an additional 1,5% attack speed for every Legend Stack you earn.

For Briar, this means more attack speed, which means more bleed applications, followed by more healing, and more AoE frenzy damage. It is preferred over Haste for most builds.

Coup de Grace

LoL Coup De Grace Rune Icon

Deals extra damage to Champions below 40% health. Pairs perfectly with Snack Attack to finish off low-health targets fast.

Sudden Impact

LoL Sudden Impact Rune Icon

Dealing damage to a champion within 4 seconds of using a dash or blink deals bonus true damage to them.

Activates consistently from Head Rush and frenzy entries, squeezing out extra damage every time Briar jumps into a fight.

Treasure Hunter

LoL Treasure Hunter Rune Icon

Gains 50 extra gold from unique takedowns, accelerating Briar's first item spike significantly. It serves as fuel for an already aggressive playstyle.

Recommended Summoner Spells for Briar

There's almost no decision to make here. Flash and Smite are the go-to for the majority of Briar games, and for good reason. Flash covers for the moments her frenzy puts her somewhere she doesn't want to be, and Smite is simply non-negotiable for a jungler, for Briar we chose Scorchclaw Smite. Some players swap Flash for Ignite when going for maximum early pressure, but Flash is the safer, more consistent pick in nearly every situation.

Summoner Spell

Description

Flash

LoL FLash Summoner Spell Icon

Blink a short distance, teleporting Briar toward your cursor’s location.

The spell extends engage range, escapes bad frenzy positions, and combos with Head Rush for longer gank reach.

Scorchclaw Smite

LoL Scorchclaw Smite Summoner Spell Icon

Builds Ember stacks over time, with large monster kills maxing them instantly. At full stacks, your next damage against a champion burns them and nearby enemies for 4% of their max health as true damage over 4 seconds and slows them by 30%.

Recommended Items for Briar

Briar's item build doubles down on her biggest strengths: sustained damage in extended fights, armor shred to keep her relevant against tanks, and enough defensive stats to survive long enough to do her job. The core path is remarkably consistent across high-level play, with a bit of flexibility depending on the enemy team composition. The table below shows some of our favorite items to use with Briar:

Scorchclaw Pup

Blade of the Ruined King

LoL Blade of the Ruined king item icon

On-hit damage based on the target's current health, plus it can steal move speed and has lifesteal.

It is a strong dueling tool that pairs naturally with Briar's attack-heavy frenzy.

Titanic Hydra

LoL Titanic Hydra Item Icon

Passive Cleave deals max health-scaling bonus physical damage to the target and enemies in a cone on every basic attack. The active empowers the next attack to deal even higher max health damage in that same cone.

A great item for when you want to keep the pressure on enemies.

Black Cleaver

LoL Black Cleaver Item Icon

Stacks armor reduction on physical damage hits and grants bonus movement speed per stack. Since Briar hits constantly in frenzy, she shreds armor fast and stays mobile throughout fights.

Death's Dance

LoL Death's Dance Item Icon

Stores 30% of incoming physical and magic damage, which you take after 3 seconds instead of immediately. On top of that, getting a kill within 3 seconds of damaging an enemy clears that stored damage entirely and heals you.

Turns Briar into an absolute nightmare to burst down in the middle of a fight.

The Collector

LoL The Collector Item Icon

Lethality, crit chance, and an execute passive that kills enemies below 5% health.

A strong pickup when the enemy team is squishy, and you want to close out kills faster rather than rely on pure sustain. The additional gold is also nice.

Guardian Angel

LoL Guardian Angel item icon

Armor and a one-time revive at 50% max health upon taking lethal damage. It is a top win-rate late-game item for Briar as it gives her a safety net when diving deep into backlines.

Lord Dominik's Regards

LoL Lord Dominik's Regards item icon

Deals 0-15% increased damage on enemy champions, depending on the target’s bonus health.

The right call when the enemy has multiple tanks or has heavily stacked HP.

Recommended Boots for Briar

Boot choice is straightforward and largely dictated by the enemy team composition. Plated Steelcaps is the default against AD-heavy lineups, while Mercury's Treads is the safer pick whenever the enemy has a lot of CC or magic damage.

Plated Steelcaps

Magic resist and tenacity. The pick against CC-heavy or AP-heavy enemy teams.

Being locked down during frenzy is dangerous, and tenacity reduces that risk.

Briar Gameplay Strategy

LoL Briar Streets Demons Skin

Briar is a champion that rewards aggression, map awareness, and target selection above everything else. Her floor is low, but her ceiling is surprisingly high. Here's what you need to know to play her well.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Briar's biggest asset is her built-in sustain. The Crimson Curse passive means she can win extended fights that would simply kill most other junglers, especially at lower health, where the healing scales up dramatically. On top of that, she brings reliable CC from multiple directions: Head Rush's stun, Chilling Scream's slow and knockback, and the fear on arrival from her ultimate. Post-6, that global ultimate is what really sets her apart, letting her appear in lanes from across the map and keeping the enemy guessing constantly.

The trade-off is that she's heavily team-dependent in fights. If she dives and her team doesn't follow up, she gets blown up fast. The Blood Frenzy/Chilling Scream interaction is also a real mechanical quirk to manage, since she can't stay in frenzy and use Chilling Scream at the same time, which means her positioning mid-fight requires some thought. Grievous Wounds hurts her significantly too, cutting into the sustain that makes her so hard to deal with normally. And without walls or terrain nearby, her Head Rush loses a portion of its CC value.

Briar in Early Game

Get to level 3 fast. Once you have all three basic abilities, ganks become genuinely dangerous. Briar's early dueling in the jungle is solid, and after your first component item, you can trade aggressively with the enemy jungler or gank overextended laners to build a lead.

Certain Death changes her gank range from "normal jungler" to "the whole map," and the threat alone forces opponents to play more cautiously. Whenever your ultimate is available, look for overextended targets to fly at.

Briar in Mid Game

This is lane swap season, and Briar loves it. Seek out picks on immobile carries. They can't reliably dodge your ultimate, and once you're on them in frenzy, they have very few escape tools available.

Look for flanks through the fog of war and use Chilling Scream to disengage when you've done your damage and need to regroup. Make sure to target immobile carries as often as possible and use the chaos of lane swaps to find free kills.

Briar in Late Game

Teams start grouping, which makes pure solo picks harder to find. Stay focused on mispositioned enemies since catching someone out of position in the late game can force a fight where your team has the numbers advantage.

In team fights, flank. Get behind the enemy front line, reach their backline carries, and survive long enough to heal through the chaos. Press R to close the gap when they're just out of melee range.

Final Words

Briar is exactly what her lore promises: a monster who's learning to be more than that, one bloody frenzy at a time. She's got an S-tier win rate right now, a satisfying play pattern, and enough mechanical depth to keep you improving game after game.

The key to making her work is knowing when to let the hunger loose. Pick your target and go absolutely feral while healing through whatever they throw at you. That's Briar in a sentence.

If you're looking for a jungler who rewards aggression, carries through extended fights, and never quite plays the same way twice, she's worth picking up.
