What is Double Pump in Fortnite?

Double Pump was a combat technique in Fortnite's early seasons where players carried two Pump Shotguns and rapidly switched between them to bypass reload times. After firing one shotgun, players would immediately switch to the second, fire it, then swap back to the first, which had completed its reload during the weapon switch.

This mechanic allowed players to achieve a much faster rate of fire than using a single Pump Shotgun. The technique became extremely popular because it could eliminate opponents quickly with consecutive high-damage shots, making it one of the most effective close-range strategies in the game's history.

When Did Double Pump Get Removed

Epic Games removed Double Pump in Season 5 during July 2018 with the v5.0 update. The developers recognized that this technique was an unintended exploit rather than a planned game mechanic.

The removal came after months of community debate about the mechanic's impact on gameplay balance. Epic Games observed that Double Pumping created an unfair advantage for players who mastered the timing while putting casual players at a severe disadvantage.

The v5.0 update introduced a new rule that prevented players from firing another shotgun immediately after using one. This created a mandatory delay between shotgun shots, regardless of weapon switching. The patch notes specifically stated: "After firing a shotgun, another shotgun cannot be fired for a very short time."

Is Double Pump Coming Back?

Double Pump has officially returned to Fortnite, but only in the permanent OG mode. Epic Games announced the mechanic's comeback through a post on X, stating: "Fortnite OG Chapter 1 Season 1 Presents: The Return of the Double Pump. Coming December 6."

The return is limited exclusively to Fortnite OG, which recreates the original Chapter 1 experience. Players can once again carry two Pump Shotguns and switch between them for rapid-fire shots, just like in the game's early seasons.
