MW4 DMZ Explained: Everything You Need to Know

MW4 DMZ sends you into Hajin with equipment to risk, objectives to complete, and an extraction to survive. Hostile soldiers patrol the map. Rival players have their own plans. Getting your loot home can become the hardest part of the run.

Both MW4 Standard and Vault Edition include DMZ. Vault adds equipment and an extra Active Duty slot, so you can start playing the mode with Standard.

Here's how deployments work, what carries between them, and what to expect before your first trip into the exclusion zone.

MW4 DMZ Summary

  • DMZ is MW4's extraction mode, with AI enemies and rival players sharing Hajin.

  • Choose Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, or Free Roam before deploying.

  • Extract with useful loot, then prepare for another run at your Forward Operating Base.

  • Your DMZ Player Level and individual Operator development are separate systems.

  • An eliminated Operator becomes MIA. Recovery costs DMZ Cash, and their lost equipment needs replacing.

  • You can deploy alone or use Squad Fill to join two allied players.

What Is DMZ in MW4?

DMZ is a PvPvE extraction shooter included with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. You enter an open combat area, pursue objectives, collect equipment, and try to leave with your haul. PvPvE refers to the mix of human opponents and computer-controlled enemies.

Successful extractions feed into later deployments. A useful weapon or a bag of crafting materials can give you a reason to leave early. Taking another fight puts that haul at risk.

Your objective changes from run to run. One deployment might follow a story mission. The next might focus on replacing lost equipment or gathering supplies.

How Does a DMZ Deployment Work?

A run starts with preparation and ends with whatever you manage to bring home. That gives even a modest objective some weight.

  1. Prepare at the FOB. Choose your Active Duty Operator, review your Orders, and pack a loadout.

  2. Choose a deployment. Pick the activity you want to pursue in Hajin.

  3. Work toward your objective. Loot along the route and decide which encounters you can afford.

  4. Head for extraction. Leave enough time and equipment to survive the pickup.

  5. Sort your haul. Store supplies and prepare for your next deployment.

For a first run, set a small target. Bring back some useful supplies, finish an achievable objective, and leave. A short successful deployment gives you something to build on.

Where Does MW4 DMZ Take Place?

where does mw4 dmz take place?

DMZ takes place in Hajin, a Korean conflict zone with urban districts, countryside, military positions, and contaminated areas. Routes through the city can involve rooftops, narrow streets, and underground spaces.

The official map guide covers locations such as NuriGO Mall, The Grid, Songdo Wharf, and Wolves Stadium. Threat levels vary between areas, and heavily defended locations can demand a much stronger kit.

Treat your route as part of your loadout. Before crossing into another district, ask what you're going there to collect and how you'll leave. A tempting building can turn into a lengthy detour when the nearest exit is several streets away.

Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, and Free Roam

The Deploy menu gives you three starting options. Each gives the run a different focus.

Deployment Option

Main Purpose

A Good Choice When You Want To…

Story Missions

Follow DMZ's narrative and mission objectives

Play through the mode's story

Dynamic Operations

Complete operations for DMZ Cash, XP, and supply drops

Enter with a defined activity to pursue

Free Roam

Enter Hajin without a selected starting mission

Gather supplies or work on your own goals

DMZ Orders provide another set of objectives to track. Check them before leaving the FOB. If an Order fits the mission you're planning, you can work toward both during the same trip.

My suggestion for early runs: pick one main job. Adding a second objective is easier to judge once you've checked your remaining supplies and position on the map.

How Do PvP and AI Enemies Work?

Enemy soldiers and rival Operators share the combat zone. You can encounter other players during an objective, at a valuable loot location, or on the way out.

PvP hunting also feeds into a Bounty system. Repeatedly targeting rival Operators can bring a price on your head, giving other players a reason to hunt you.

You still have to account for AI pressure. Prolonged fighting can raise the local threat and draw reinforcements. A squad that wins its first exchange may find the next one arriving before everyone has reloaded.

Choose fights with an exit in mind. If your backpack already holds the supplies you came for, you have a reason to avoid another encounter. If you're heading toward a defended objective, save enough ammunition and medical supplies for the return trip.

What Is the Forward Operating Base?

what is the forward operating base?

The Forward Operating Base, or FOB, is your home between deployments. You'll return here to manage Operators, store loot, prepare weapons, craft equipment, and plan another run.

Its stations include the Stash, Operators station, 3D Printer, Vendor, Gunsmith, and Boss Board. More options become available as you progress.

DMZ Cash supports activities such as buying equipment and preparing weapons. Keep a separate budget for COD Points if you're also buying store bundles; your FOB purchases use DMZ Cash.

Before selling a haul, check what your next task needs. A quick look through your objectives can save you a return trip for something you just sold.

How Does DMZ Progression Work?

DMZ has several kinds of progress running together. The two to separate from the start are your DMZ Player Level and your Active Duty Operator's development.

Your DMZ Player Level runs from 1 to 70 and provides mode-specific rewards, including access to FOB services and crafting recipes. DMZ XP also contributes to MW4's overall Player Progression. Multiplayer and Warzone XP don't raise your DMZ Level.

Individual Operators develop through their own Dog Tags and Traits. The three Trait Trees are Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist. Operator Prestige adds another long-term goal once you've met its requirements.

For now, the practical takeaway is to check both your player rewards and the Operator you're sending out. Progress on one screen doesn't tell you everything about the other.

If your squad is already further along, MW4 DMZ leveling can help you catch up on the mode’s separate level track.

What Happens If You Die in DMZ?

An Operator eliminated during a deployment becomes MIA, or Missing in Action. They can't deploy again until you recover or dismiss them.

Recovery uses DMZ Cash from your Bank. An Operator with more invested Trait Points costs more to recover. They keep their selected Traits after recovery, and you'll need to replace their lost gear.

You can also dismiss that Operator and recruit a replacement. A Free Loadout is available when you need equipment, giving you a way to get back into Hajin after a bad run.

For early deployments, pack a kit you can afford to lose. That leaves room to learn from a failed approach without putting your favorite equipment on every run.

How Do You Extract From Hajin?

how do you extract from hajin?

Standard exfil locations have green smoke. Call the extraction helicopter, hold the area, and board when it arrives. Other extraction methods include Fulton balloons and Flares.

The pickup can attract trouble. Exfil signals are visible and loud, and other squads may watch the site. Radiation also becomes a greater threat as the deployment continues.

Start moving toward an exit before your supplies become desperate. Check the approaches, reload before the pickup, and avoid standing in the open just to watch the helicopter arrive.

The last few minutes deserve the same attention as the objective itself. You've already done the work of collecting the loot. Give yourself enough time to get it home.

Can You Play MW4 DMZ Solo?

Yes. You can deploy alone, and Squad Fill lets you enter with two allied players if you want teammates. Turn Squad Fill off when you want to go without automatically assigned allies.

A solo deployment still takes place in the shared combat zone. Plan around the possibility of meeting a squad, and avoid treating every nearby gunshot as an invitation.

If you're learning with friends, agree on the goal before deploying. One player heading for extraction and another starting a new fight can turn a routine exit into a rescue attempt.

Is MW4 DMZ Free to Play?

DMZ requires Modern Warfare 4. Standard includes the mode; Vault provides additional content such as its DMZ Deployment Bonus.

Eligible digital preorders received DMZ early access starting October 20, 2026. The full game launches on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

You don't need Vault to try DMZ or develop your Operators. Let a few deployments show you what your setup needs before spending on MW4 items and services.

FAQs About MW4 DMZ

What Does DMZ Stand For?

DMZ stands for demilitarized zone. In MW4, it's the name of the game's extraction mode set in Hajin.

Does Standard Edition Include DMZ?

Yes. MW4 Standard Edition includes DMZ. Vault adds bonus content, including an extra Active Duty slot and a Deployment Kit.

Can You Play DMZ Without Fighting Other Players?

You can focus on AI enemies and objectives, but rival players share the map. A run focused on missions can still lead to a PvP encounter.

Do You Lose Your Operator Permanently When You Die?

An eliminated Operator becomes MIA. You can recover them for DMZ Cash or dismiss them and recruit a replacement. Recovery preserves selected Traits, with lost gear needing replacement.

Does Multiplayer XP Increase Your DMZ Level?

No. DMZ has a separate 70-level track. XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone doesn't increase that DMZ Level.

Final Words

Start with an objective you can finish, equipment you're willing to risk, and a route out. Those three decisions give a new DMZ player plenty to work with.

After a few deployments, you'll have a better idea of the runs you enjoy and the supplies you keep running short of. Use that experience to plan your next trip into Hajin.
