What is Blue Essence in League of Legends?

Blue Essence Definition

Blue Essence (BE) is the free in-game currency in League of Legends that you earn by playing, not by paying. It's mainly used to unlock champions, and it also covers extra rune pages and cosmetics from the Blue Essence Emporium. Unlike Riot Points, Blue Essence can't be bought with real money.

For new players, LoL Blue Essence is how a champion pool gets built without spending anything. Veterans who already own most of the roster tend to stockpile it for rune pages and Emporium exclusives, while players who'd rather skip the grind pick from LoL accounts for sale with champions already unlocked.

What Is Blue Essence Used For in LoL?

Champions are the biggest Blue Essence expense. Riot cut every champion's BE price in half in 2025, so prices now sit in tiers of 225, 675, 1,575, 2,400 and 3,150 BE, with older champions at the low end and recent releases at the top. Beyond champions, BE pays for extra rune pages, unlocking champion shards in the Loot tab, some Eternals, and limited cosmetics in the Emporium.

How to Get Blue Essence in League of Legends

Regular matches don't pay out BE on their own, and First Win of the Day was removed in 2025. Most Blue Essence now comes from these sources:

  • New account levels: Levels 1 to 30 hand out BE and champion shards as you climb.

  • Free Pass track: Each Pass gives around 9,000 BE across its free milestones, along with Champion Capsules.

  • Repeatable milestones: Once the main track is done, extra milestones keep paying 750 BE each.

  • Champion shards: Disenchanting shards in the Loot tab turns them into BE, and pricier champions return more.

  • Hextech Chests: Earned through the free Pass and Honor, these Hextech chests can drop champion shards.

  • Events and missions: Limited-time events sometimes reward Blue Essence directly.

Can You Buy Blue Essence in LoL?

No. Riot doesn't sell Blue Essence, and RP can't be converted into BE. RP and BE only connect in one roundabout way: you buy Riot Points, spend them on Hextech Chests, and a chest may drop a champion shard. Disenchanting that shard gives you some BE, but it's random and costs real money, so playing and finishing the free Pass is the reliable way to earn Blue Essence.

What Is the Blue Essence Emporium?

Blue Essence Emporium is a limited-time shop that opens roughly twice a year and sells cosmetics for BE instead of RP. Its lineup includes icons, chromas, ward skins, emotes, profile titles and even a full champion skin, URFWick. Most Emporium exclusives can only be bought once, and chromas are limited to skins released at least six months before the shop opens. Prices from recent runs look like this:
