Borderlands Games
Borderlands is the series that defined the looter-shooter genre, developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K since 2009. The Mainline Series
Borderlands introduced the Vault Hunter formula in 2009, sending four original Vault Hunters to Pandora in search of a mythical Vault rumoured to hold alien treasure and technology, guided by a mysterious benefactor and opposed by the Atlas corporation. Borderlands 2 followed in 2012, with a new team of Vault Hunters tricked onto Pandora and left for dead by Hyperion CEO Handsome Jack, who is trying to awaken an ancient monster called the Warrior to control the planet. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel fills in the story between the first two games, set on Pandora's moon Elpis before Handsome Jack's rise to power, with low-gravity combat and new laser weapons. Borderlands 3, released in 2019, introduces the Calypso twins, Troy and Tyreen, who've united the galaxy's bandit clans into a cult hunting Vaults across multiple new worlds beyond Pandora. The newest entry, Borderlands 4, released September 12, 2025, moves the series to the open-world planet of Kairos, where four new Vault Hunters, Rafa, Harlowe, Amon, and Vex, take on a dictator known as the Timekeeper, with new movement mechanics like grappling and gliding alongside revamped skill trees.
Tales from the Borderlands
Tales from the Borderlands and its sequel, New Tales from the Borderlands, take the series in a different direction entirely, narrative-driven, choice-based adventures following new characters whose paths cross with the wider Borderlands universe. These games trade looter-shooter combat for dialogue, decisions, and consequences, and work well whether or not you've played the mainline series.
