Minecraft Capes: Types, Rarity, and How to Get One
Minecraft Capes are purely cosmetic items worn on the back of a player's skin. They don't affect gameplay in any way, but they carry a lot of weight in the community because of how they're obtained. Unlike skins, Minecraft capes can't be custom-made or purchased directly from Mojang. Every official cape is tied to a specific event, promotion, or account action, and once that window closes, the cape is gone for good.
The easiest cape to obtain right now is the Common Cape, available to any player who logs into Bedrock Edition with a Microsoft account. The Pan Cape functions similarly and is automatically given to all Bedrock Edition owners without any time restrictions. These two capes are the most accessible options for players looking to get a cape without having to pursue a limited-time event.
Some capes required players to complete specific actions. The Migrator Cape was awarded to everyone who migrated their Mojang account to a Microsoft account, and the Vanilla Cape was given to players who owned both the Java and Bedrock Editions on the same account before June 2022. Neither of these capes can be obtained anymore, making accounts that have them noticeably rarer to find.
Minecraft Capes Distribution and Rarity
Mojang has distributed capes through multiple channels over the years. Some were given at in-person Minecon events, others through account migrations, social media giveaways, streaming platforms like Twitch and TikTok, anniversary celebrations, and movie promotions. The distribution method changes with each release, but the pattern remains consistent; each cape is linked to a specific time frame, and once that window closes, the cape becomes permanently unavailable to anyone who missed it. This rarity is why older capes and Minecraft cape accounts for sale are so hard to find.
The MINECON capes from 2011 to 2016 were exclusively awarded to attendees who were physically present at the events, with approximately 27,000 capes in total. Mojang later deactivated unused redemption links for multiple years. The Founder's Cape from Minecon Live 2019 remains available in the Bedrock Marketplace but is priced beyond the affordability of most players.
Personal Minecraft capes are even rarer, awarded to a select few community members for particular contributions to the game, with only a small number existing throughout the entire player base. Players wanting to buy Minecraft cape accounts often specifically look for profiles that have these older, unobtainable capes, as there is no other way to obtain them.
