The MW4 player count is off to a stronger start than last year's game, at least on Steam. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 passed 108,500 concurrent Steam players during campaign early access, which already tops Black Ops 7's best Steam peak with only one mode live.
Activision hasn't shared console numbers or sales figures, so Steam is the only public window for now, a partial picture but a useful one.
Here's how many people play MW4 at launch, how its Steam charts compare with BO7 and BO6, and what that means for matchmaking. We'll refresh the numbers after the first weekend and after the first week.

How Many People Are Playing MW4?
Over 108,500 people played MW4 at the same time on Steam during campaign early access, and that's the best public number so far. The figure comes from SteamDB data that CharlieIntel reported on October 17, a day after Campaign Early Access opened.
Activision hasn't posted a total player count across platforms. Launch-day multiplayer numbers on Steam will land over the next 24 hours, so treat the early access figure as a starting point.
The early access peak counts only digital pre-order buyers on Steam playing the campaign. DMZ Early Access opened on October 20, and full multiplayer arrives with today's launch, so the next peak should climb past it. Read our MW4 multiplayer review.
If a campaign-only window beat BO7's best day on Steam, multiplayer has room to pass the beta's 115,145. I'd expect it to, though the first update will settle it.

Notebookcheck reported that BO7 never rose above roughly 100,000 on Steam, so a campaign-only MW4 window already beats a full game's lifetime peak.
Black Ops 6 is the bar MW4 still has to clear. It also launched on Game Pass on day one, a route to new PC players that MW4 skips this year.
Reception points the same way as the MW4 Steam charts. Notebookcheck put MW4's Steam user score at 84% at the time of its report, against 38.71% for BO7.
Why Steam Shows Only Part of the MW4 Player Base
Steam is one of several PC storefronts. The official MW4 page lists Xbox, the Xbox PC app, PlayStation, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo, and only Steam publishes live concurrent numbers.
Consoles don't share public counts either. MW4 is also the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console since Ghosts on Wii U in 2013, so the Switch 2 adds a pool nobody can measure from outside.
MW4 sales are just as opaque. Activision hasn't released sales figures, and the only estimate so far comes from Alinea Analytics, which put Steam sales above 105,000 copies before launch.
Game Pass changes the math this year. Activision confirmed in its launch post that MW4 won't join Game Pass until Holiday 2027, so everyone playing at launch owns a copy.
What the MW4 Player Count Means for Matchmaking
A full launch population should keep queues short for the next few weeks. That matters most for playlists that split the pool, such as Gunfight and Big War. TweakTown reported that MW4's beta lost more than half its Steam players within a day of its peak, so the first weekend and day 7 will show whether launch interest holds.

The early numbers say MW4 has more pull on PC than BO7 ever did, a strong signal for a series that lost momentum in 2025.
