What do LoL Voidgrubs do?

voidgrubs definition

Voidgrubs are neutral monsters in League of Legends that make their home in the Baron pit during the early phases of Summoner’s Rift. A Voidgrub camp consists of three individual Grubs, each possessing the ability to spawn smaller Voidmites during combat.

These creatures are more than just simple jungle camps; they represent a strategic objective for teams to contest, providing buffs that can substantially alter the trajectory of a match. The Voidgrubs' unique position in the game's ecosystem makes them a focal point for early skirmishes and tactical decision-making.

When do Voidgrubs Spawn?

The first group of Voidgrubs spawns on Summoner's Rift at the 5-minute mark, simultaneously with a period when junglers are typically looking to make their first significant impact on the game. This early spawn time makes them an attractive target for junglers and roaming laners seeking to secure an early advantage.

Each Voidgrub operates on its own 4-minute respawn timer, creating the potential for up to two spawn groups in a single game. However, this second spawn is dependent on the first group of Grubs being defeated before the 9:45 mark, adding an element of urgency to their initial clear.

The limited availability of Voidgrubs adds a crucial element of time pressure to early game decision-making. The camp despawns permanently at 13:45 (or 13:55 if engaged in combat), making way for the Rift Herald at 14:00 minute mark.

Voidgrubs Buff Mechanics

The true value of defeating Voidgrubs lies in the powerful buff they bestow upon their slayers. When a Voidgrub falls, all members of the victorious team receive a stack of the "Touch of the Void" buff. This grants bonus damage over time to structures, significantly boosting the team's ability to push lanes and demolish towers. The buff's potency scales with the number of stacks accumulated, encouraging teams to contest multiple Grubs to maximize their advantage.

As teams accumulate more Voidgrub stacks, they unlock increasingly powerful benefits. Upon reaching four stacks, the team gains the "Hunger of the Void" buff, an enhanced state that periodically summons allied Voidmites to assist in sieging enemy structures.

This mechanic becomes even more impactful if a team secures five or six stacks, as it increases the number of summoned Voidmites. This escalating buff system creates a compelling risk-reward scenario, incentivizing teams to potentially overextend for additional stacks to gain a significant pushing advantage.

How to Kill Voidgrubs?

Engaging the Voidgrubs presents a unique combat scenario that demands strategic thinking. Every 12 seconds, each Grub spawns four Voidmites – fragile but numerous allies that complicate the encounter. This mechanic forces teams to balance their focus between the durable Grubs and the swarming Voidmites.

While not as formidable as Dragons or Barons, Voidgrubs shouldn't be underestimated. Their defensive mechanism, which heals surviving Grubs when one falls, adds a layer of tactical depth. Teams must choose between focusing fire on a single target or bringing enough firepower to quickly eliminate all three.

Junglers with strong AoE abilities have a distinct advantage in these encounters, as their AoE efficiently clears Voidmites while maintaining pressure on the main targets, streamlining the process. This efficiency is crucial, as it allows teams to secure the objective quickly and minimize the risk of enemy interference.
