About A Hat in Time
A Hat in Time is a 3D collect-a-thon platformer developed by Gears for Breakfast and published by Humble Bundle, an independent studio spanning four countries that grew from lead developer Jonas Kærlev's solo project starting in August 2012. The game was funded through a Kickstarter campaign in 2013, raising $296,360 against an initial goal of $30,000, and released on Steam for Windows and macOS on October 5, 2017, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions following that December through publisher Humble Bundle, and a Nintendo Switch version arriving in October 2019.
Hat Kid's journey home is cut short when a Mafia member intercepts her spaceship, demanding a toll, and the ensuing scuffle sends her ship's fuel, the Time Pieces, scattering across a nearby planet below. To recover them, Hat Kid must jump, fight, and stitch new hats granting different powers to make her way through five massive, varied worlds, each with its own distinct theme and cast of characters, from the menacing Mafia of Cooks to the goofy avian workers of Dead Bird Studio and the spooky shadows of Subcon Forest.
Every mission in the game is designed to feel distinct rather than to reuse the same objective structure repeatedly. One mission might have players solving a murder mystery aboard a moving train by gathering clues and interrogating suspects, while another turns them into a marshal leading a parade, or sneaking through a bird-run film studio without getting caught. Hats grant Hat Kid different abilities as she progresses, opening up new traversal and combat options across the open, freely explorable worlds.
Two paid DLC expansions have been released. Seal the Deal, released in September 2018, adds the Arctic Cruise world and Death Wish, an exceptionally difficult challenge mode, alongside a large collection of cosmetic outfits, flairs, dyes, and camera filters, and introduces free local split-screen co-op for all players. Nyakuza Metro + Online Party, released in May 2019, adds a Japan-inspired underground city where Hat Kid joins a cat-themed street gang, alongside a new baseball bat weapon and an online multiplayer mode supporting up to 50 players in a single shared world.
The PC version supports mods through the Steam Workshop. A Hat in Time holds a Metacritic score of 79 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.
