The depths of the Umbral Abyss are yours to conquer in the Age of Wonders 4: Eldritch Realms expansion. Terrify your foes as an Eldritch Sovereign, wield mighty new tomes of magic, survive world-altering global events and lead your people against the darkness before it spreads across the realms.New Map Layer: The Umbral Abyss. A dark domain of Corruption and Fear threatens to consume the realms of mortals. It includes new tactical combat maps, a dozen unique locations to explore and exploit and new Umbral Dwelling independent factions inhabited by Umbral demons. These denizens of the abyss are corrupt creatures dedicated to the destruction of the light and invasion of the realms. The abyss will harm units who venture in it, but immunity can be gained by buying the Umbral Flesh Minor Transformation from the Umbral Dwellings.

Choose your path as an Eldritch Sovereign ruler and decide between Dominating your foes, Manipulating the flesh or Wild, chaotic magic.

Age of Wonders 4 is a 4X turn-based strategy game developed by Triumph Studios and published by Paradox Interactive. It was released on May 2, 2023, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It's the sixth game in the Age of Wonders series overall, a franchise dating back to 1999, and Triumph's first return to the mainline fantasy setting in nearly a decade following the sci-fi spin-off Planetfall.
At the end of the previous game's Third Age, the warring Wizard Kings had been banished from the world of Athla to the Shadow Realm, only to become trapped and corrupted for centuries in the void between realms. Now, scheming Shadowborn have helped several of these ancient wizards escape their otherworldly imprisonment and return to Athla to establish themselves as gods over mortals. Players take on the role of an Ascended Champion, building a new home in the Valley of Wonders and either joining the Wizard Kings' rise to power or resisting their tyrannical rule using their own arcane knowledge.
Character and faction customization sits at the heart of the game's design, letting players combine bodily forms, societal traits, and arcane powers to build anything from a clan of cannibal halflings to mystic moon elves. Claiming Tomes of Magic evolves an empire's units and abilities over the course of a game, with rulers and followers changing both visually and mechanically as they gather power. A new narrative event system adds encounters, diplomacy, and reactive storytelling throughout a session, alongside optional story missions, though there's no traditional linear campaign with fixed missions. Realm creation options let players customize geography, climate, and rule modifiers for each new game, or generate a randomized realm to explore instead.
The Pantheon system lets rulers who complete a campaign ascend and carry new traits and powers into future sessions, with previous rulers potentially reappearing as rivals or allies in subsequent games. Online multiplayer supports both simultaneous and asynchronous play, and an optional Allied Victories setting rewards cooperative play by letting all direct allies share in a winner's victory.
Since launch, Age of Wonders 4 has received a steady stream of paid expansions and content packs, including Dragon Dawn, Primal Fury, Eldritch Realms, Empires & Ashes, Giant Kings, Thrones of Blood, and Archon Prophecy, alongside further planned releases including Rise from Ruin and Secrets of the Archmages in 2026.
