About American Truck Simulator
American Truck Simulator is a driving simulation game developed and published by SCS Software. First announced in September 2013, it was released on February 2, 2016, for PC via Steam and later announced Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions. It is the fifth installment in the Truck Simulator series, a spiritual successor to 18 Wheels of Steel, and runs in parallel to Euro Truck Simulator 2, sharing much of the same underlying design while focusing on American conventional semi-trucks and U.S. geography.
The game combines truck driving with business management. New players start by choosing a home city to operate from, taking on quick delivery jobs with provided trucks before earning enough money to buy their own equipment and build out a proper fleet. Each delivery job involves picking a route from a menu of available cargo, driving to the destination within a set time limit, and earning money and experience based on distance traveled, cargo type, and how well the load was handled along the way. Damaged cargo or late deliveries reduce the payout.
The game launched with a compressed depiction of California and Nevada at a 1:20 scale, later expanded from the smaller initial ratio to make routes feel less rushed while keeping playtimes reasonable. Licensed truck brands include Kenworth, Peterbilt, Volvo, International, Western Star, Mack, and Freightliner, each with its own handling characteristics and customization options. SCS Software has steadily expanded the game's map through paid state DLC over the years, growing well beyond the original three states to cover dozens of additional states across the country, with further expansions like Illinois and British Columbia already announced.
Convoy mode, added as a free update, lets players form online groups and drive routes together. Extensive Steam Workshop support has produced a large modding community, with projects like ProMods adding entirely custom map extensions on top of the base game. Console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S were announced in August 2025 and are in development, marking the series' first release beyond PC. American Truck Simulator holds a Metacritic score of 76 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.
