It was released on February 20, 2024, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 with a macOS version following on March 1, 2024.

The game starts with a standard 52-card deck and a series of escalating score thresholds called Blinds. Players draw a hand of cards, select which to play, and score points based on standard poker hand rankings. The objective is to hit each Blind's target score within a limited number of hands. Falling short ends the run.

What sets Balatro apart is the Joker card system. Jokers are special cards acquired throughout a run that add passive bonuses, multipliers, and effects to how hands are scored. One Joker might double the value of all flush hands, while another adds a multiplier every time a specific card is played. Building a run around a set of Jokers that work together is the core of the game's strategy.

Beyond Jokers, players can modify their deck with consumable cards found in the in-game shop. Planet cards strengthen specific hand types, Tarot cards apply effects to cards in the deck, and Spectral cards introduce rarer and more unpredictable modifications. Each shop between rounds offers new options to build around or redirect a run entirely.

Balatro won Game of the Year at the 2025 Game Developers Choice Awards, has sold over five million copies, and holds a Metacritic score of 90 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.
