The game follows a straightforward premise: descend through the floors of the Devil's Bastion, a vast underground dungeon, and defeat Baron Herx, an undead lich whose curse has devastated the town of Hamlet above. Every run generates a new dungeon layout, meaning no two playthroughs are identical. Permadeath is in full effect, so when a character dies, the run ends and players start from the top again.

Barony draws directly from classic PC RPGs, including Ultima Underworld, System Shock, and Daggerfall, as well as the roguelike tradition of games like Nethack. The first-person perspective is central to the experience, and the dungeon crawling is backed by a deep item system covering hundreds of collectibles, weapons, armor, spells, and rare artifacts.
