The game is set in the near future, where humanity has colonized the subsurface ocean of Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. Life exists only in the dark waters beneath the frozen surface, and players navigate this environment aboard a submarine, completing missions for various factions while managing the constant threats that exist below the ice.
Each crew member occupies a specific role aboard the vessel. The Captain steers and issues commands. The Engineer manages electrical systems and wiring. The Mechanic maintains the hull and machinery. The Medic handles injuries using a detailed treatment system that tracks individual wounds, chemical interactions, and medical conditions. The Security Officer manages combat and intruders. In co-op, each role is filled by a different player, making communication and coordination essential to keeping the mission together.
The submarine's internal systems are fully simulated. Flooding, electrical fires, oxygen depletion, power surges, and reactor failures are all possible and must be detected and addressed in real time while the crew simultaneously deals with whatever else is happening outside or inside the hull. Alien creatures patrol the ocean and can breach the submarine during travel, and hostile human factions can board and attack.
A full submarine editor lets players design and build their own vessels from scratch. Campaign mode provides a persistent layer with exploration, factions, missions, and upgrades. Sandbox and single-mission modes are also available. Steam Workshop hosts over 50,000 community-made submarines, campaigns, and mods.
