About Beyond Divinity

Beyond Divinity is an action RPG developed by Larian Studios, directed by Swen Vincke, and published in Europe by Ubisoft, in North America by HIP Interactive, and in the UK by Digital Jesters. It was released on April 27, 2004, for PC, following the earlier German release on April 1, 2004, with a macOS version arriving on November 15, 2013. It's the direct sequel to Divine Divinity (2002), the game that launched the Divinity series.

Set twenty years after the events of Divine Divinity, the story follows a paladin in servitude to the Divine who becomes soul-forged with a Death Knight, his ideological nemesis, binding the two together for what appears to be eternity unless a way to undo the curse can be found. Together with this unwanted companion, the paladin embarks on a journey to unlock the secret of riftrunning, their only hope of escaping this fate. The game leans into dark, witty dialogue that reflects the absurdity of the two characters' unwilling partnership throughout the story.

Gameplay carries over the isometric hack-and-slash foundation from Divine Divinity while introducing dual character control, letting players manage both the paladin and the Death Knight simultaneously, each with their own stats and equipment. Summoning dolls, acquired one per act, let players call in specific creatures for support, including a skeleton doll capable of wielding a crossbow for ranged assistance, with these summoned allies controllable directly in combat or used simply to carry additional loot.

The game is structured across four acts, beginning with a relatively linear opening before opening up into much greater freedom of movement in later acts. Battlefields, a demon-infested landscape filled with procedurally generated quests, offers extended replay value beyond the main story. Beyond Divinity holds a Metacritic score of 73.
