About BONEWORKS
BONEWORKS is an experimental physics-based VR action-adventure game developed and published by Stress Level Zero, a small independent studio. It was released on Steam on December 10, 2019, for SteamVR-compatible headsets, following an earlier tech demo called The Room that first proved the viability of realistic physics in virtual reality, and the studio's earlier release Duck Season, an homage to Duck Hunt built around simulated gun physics.
Set in the 1990s, superconglomerate Monogon Industries successfully harnesses the energy of a dimension known as the Voidway, using it to build the titular BONEWORKS engine and develop MythOS, a virtual simulation space meant to offer infinite livable space for work and play, governed by an artificial intelligence called the Voidmind. Players control Arthur Ford, a Monogon employee, venturing through this now-abandoned virtual space for what seems to be the last time after a Void breach locks the system down, fighting off zombie-like corrupted Null Bodies and armed security forces along the way.
The game's defining feature is its fully simulated virtual body, which responds not just to the player's real-world movements but to physical obstructions and interactions within the game world itself, a system director Brandon Laatsch built specifically to push VR interaction design forward following the influence of Half-Life 2's approach to physics-based gameplay. Players can climb, grab, throw, and manipulate nearly anything in the environment, with combat and puzzle-solving both built directly around this physics foundation rather than more traditional VR mechanics like teleportation or simplified interaction systems.
Beyond the main campaign, the game includes a physics sandbox mode, a battle arena, and story replays that unlock additional items as players progress, giving substantial replay value outside of the core narrative. A sequel, BONELAB, released September 29, 2022, continuing the studio's focus on physics-driven VR gameplay with added mod support. BONEWORKS holds a Metacritic score of 72 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
