About Celeste

Celeste is a precision platformer developed by Maddy Makes Games and Extremely OK Games, published by Maddy Makes Games. It was released on January 25, 2018, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch, with an Xbox One version following on January 26. Development began in August 2015 when Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry built a small prototype for the PICO-8 fantasy console over a single weekend, later deciding to expand the concept into a full commercial release, drawing inspiration from Super Mario Bros. 3 and Thorson's earlier game TowerFall.

The story follows Madeline, a young woman who sets out to climb Celeste Mountain, a fictional peak layered with strange and shifting magic. Along the way, she confronts Badeline, a personification of her own self-doubt who repeatedly tries to stop her from reaching the summit. The developers wove themes of anxiety, depression, and self-forgiveness directly into both the narrative and the gameplay itself, resulting in a story widely praised for treating mental health with genuine honesty rather than as a surface-level backdrop.

Movement is built around jumping, wall climbing, wall jumping, and an air dash usable once before needing to be refreshed, whether by touching solid ground, collecting a stamina crystal, or transitioning between screens. Each chapter is composed of hundreds of hand-crafted rooms, layering increasingly complex platforming challenges around this small core moveset. Strawberries scattered throughout each level serve as optional collectibles for players seeking extra challenge, while an Assist Mode lets players adjust game speed, invincibility, and other settings to make the experience more forgiving for those who want it.

A free DLC chapter, Farewell, was released on September 9, 2019, adding a substantial new final chapter to the story. Two small standalone spin-offs followed in later years: Celeste 2: Lani's Trek, a sequel to the original PICO-8 prototype, released for the game's third anniversary in 2021, and Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain, a short 3D reimagining released for the sixth anniversary in 2024. The developers have stated they have no plans for a full sequel to the main game.

Celeste holds a Metacritic score of 88 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam. The game is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, Xbox Game Pass Essential, and Xbox Game Pass Premium. If you are already a subscriber, you can access it directly through your membership. If you do not have Game Pass, GameBoost offers Xbox Game Pass gift cards as an alternative way to get started.
