Cuphead is a run-and-gun indie action game developed and published by Studio MDHR, directed by brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer. The game was first announced in 2013 and released on September 29, 2017, for PC via Steam and Xbox One as a timed console exclusive, with macOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 ports following over the next few years.

Every visual element in Cuphead was created through traditional hand-drawn animation, deliberately preserving the human imperfections of 1930s rubber hose cartoons rather than smoothing them out digitally. Chad Moldenhauer hand-drew the animations and painted the backgrounds with watercolors before colorizing them in Photoshop. The soundtrack, composed by Kristofer Maddigan, was recorded with a full big band to match the era the game draws from.

Players take control of Cuphead or his brother Mugman in single-player or local co-op, traversing a series of strange worlds inspired by classic cartoon settings. The game is structured around boss battles above all else, with players acquiring new weapons, learning powerful super moves, and uncovering hidden secrets along the way. Defeating each boss unlocks new areas and run-and-gun stages, allowing for some non-linear exploration within each isle while still enforcing an overall progression across the islands. The parry mechanic, used to deflect pink-colored projectiles, plays a central role in both combat and traversal, including reviving a downed co-op partner.

Cuphead is widely known for its difficulty, drawing frequent comparisons to the Souls-like genre for its emphasis on pattern recognition and precise execution against demanding boss encounters. Local co-op for two players is supported natively; online co-op is not built into the game directly but can be achieved through Steam's Remote Play Together feature or third-party tools.

Cuphead - The Delicious Last Course, a story-driven DLC expansion, was released on June 30, 2022, introducing Ms. Chalice as a new playable character alongside a new cast of bosses on a previously undiscovered Inkwell Isle.
