About Darkest Dungeon II
Darkest Dungeon II is a gothic roguelike turn-based RPG developed and published by Red Hook Studios. Players form a party, prepare a stagecoach, and travel across a ruined landscape on a desperate journey to prevent the apocalypse.
Each expedition takes the party through dangerous regions filled with branching paths, combat encounters, merchants, assistance events, hospitals, and other locations. Choosing a route means balancing potential rewards against stress, damage, disease, and the risk of losing an entire run.
Combat is built around positioning, status effects, tokens, abilities, and coordinated party roles. Heroes can deal damage, protect allies, apply buffs or debuffs, heal injuries, and manage stress, but poor decisions can quickly leave the group vulnerable.
Stress affects more than individual survival. Relationships can form between heroes as they travel, producing positive or negative effects that influence skills and combat performance. Keeping the party together emotionally can be as important as maintaining health.
Each hero has a distinctive combat role, personality, and backstory. Shrine of Reflection encounters reveal parts of their past and unlock additional abilities, giving players more tactical options during later journeys.
The stagecoach acts as the party’s mobile base. Players can equip it with useful items, collect supplies, and make route decisions while travelling toward the Mountain and the dangers waiting at the end of each Confession.
Progress continues between failed expeditions through the Altar of Hope. Candles earned during a run can unlock heroes, items, stagecoach upgrades, and other permanent improvements that expand future possibilities.
Darkest Dungeon II also includes Kingdoms, an alternative game mode focused on defending the realm against spreading threats. It offers a different structure from the expedition-based Confessions mode while retaining the game’s tactical combat and resource pressure.
