It is the third main entry in the Dead Island series and a sequel to Dead Island (2011).
Set in 2020, fifteen years after the events of Dead Island: Riptide, the story follows a group of survivors known as Slayers, attempting to escape Los Angeles aboard a military evacuation flight after a new and aggressive zombie outbreak overwhelms the city. The plane is shot down after an infected passenger is discovered aboard, stranding the Slayers in the heart of the outbreak, now referred to as "Hell-A." Players choose from six distinct Slayer characters, each with their own personality, voiced dialogue, and unique skill specializations.
Combat focuses on visceral, physics-driven first-person melee fighting, supported by a dismemberment system that reacts dynamically to where and how zombies are struck. Firearms, makeshift weapons, and a wide range of craftable mods supplement the melee-focused core loop. A rage ability called Fury Mode grants a temporary surge of power, letting players unleash devastating attacks against tougher enemy groups when activated. The open-world version of Los Angeles spans multiple distinct districts, including the beaches of Venice and the wealthy hillside streets of Bel Air, each suffering different forms of zombie infestation.
Two-story DLC expansions have been released since launch. Haus, released in November 2023, sends players to a billionaire's secluded mansion. SoLA, released shortly after, takes players to a sun-soaked music festival to investigate a mysterious distress signal. A major free update in October 2024 added a New Game Plus mode with an increased level cap and new skill slot, alongside Neighborhood Watch, a cooperative horde mode tasking players with defending a location against escalating waves of zombies over five in-game days. Dead Island 2 holds a Metacritic score of 75.
