What is ARAM in League of Legends?

ARAM Definition
ARAM Definition

ARAM stands for "All Random All Mid" and is a popular game mode in League of Legends. ARAM provides more casual, low-pressure gameplay with an emphasis on nonstop action and fighting. It's popular for some quick League fun without the intensity of ranked matches.

ARAM is played on the Howling Abyss map which has a single lane. Teams consist of 5 players each who are randomly assigned a champion. However, Players don't get to choose their champion. Instead, the game randomly selects from a pool of available champions. This leads to unpredictable and varied team compositions.

The main gameplay focus of ARAM is constant team fighting and action. Because there is only one lane, players group up and engage in fights very frequently. There are no jungle camps or objectives. The goal is to destroy the enemy team's nexus turret and nexus as fast as possible by pushing down the lane. The first team to do so wins.

ARAM games are designed to be shorter than regular League matches, lasting 15-20 minutes typically. The rapid pace requires quick thinking and reaction times. Champion and item selections are restricted to fit ARAM's unique style. For example, snowball items are added that allow launching at enemies.

Is there a Ranked Mode in ARAM?

No, there is no ranked mode for ARAM in League of Legends. ARAM is considered a more casual game mode compared to Summoner's Rift and does not have a ranked ladder or tier system. Here are some key points on ranked play and ARAM:

  • ARAM was designed to be a faster, more chaotic format focused on constant teamfighting rather than ranked competitiveness. Matches emphasize fun over ranked integrity.
  • Player skill expression is reduced since champions are randomly assigned and there is only one lane. Elo ratings and ranks could not accurately reflect skill level.
  • The random champion assignment creates unpredictability and imbalance between team compositions. This randomness makes it unsuitable for competitive ranked play.
  • No major tournaments or leagues use ARAM as a competitive format. The pro League of Legends scene focuses solely on 5v5 Summoner's Rift.
  • Victory in ARAM depends more on team coordination and adaptation rather than individual skill. This reduces the ability to influence matches through personal ability.
