Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate is the ninth expansion for Destiny 2, developed and published by Bungie. It launched the Year of Prophecy, Year 8 of the game's content cycle, and marked the beginning of the Fate Saga, a new multiyear narrative direction following the conclusion of the long-running Light and Darkness saga.
Guardians track a mysterious signal to Kepler, a previously undiscovered planetoid at the edge of the solar system in the Oort cloud, invited there by the Nine, a shadowy pantheon of dark matter-based beings who have been quietly observing the Guardian's journey throughout the franchise. Ikora Rey and a new character named Lodi take a central role in the story, which uncovers a threat that predates everything Guardians previously understood about the Sol system. Unlike most Destiny 2 destinations, Kepler is built for single-player exploration in a style closer to a Metroidvania than the game's usual open patrol zones, drawing on the pathfinding and puzzle-solving structure more typical of the game's dungeons.
The expansion introduces sweeping changes to core Destiny 2 systems. Armor 3.0 reworks how armor stats function, with existing gear automatically converted to the new system and new armor pieces gaining set bonuses for equipping multiple items from the same collection. Weapons now drop across five tiers tied to the difficulty of content played, with higher tiers offering stronger attributes, enhanced perks, and unique appearances at the top tier. A new heavy weapon type, a crossbow firing a single recoverable bolt, joins the existing weapon archetypes. World Tiers let players choose their preferred difficulty level, with higher tiers unlocking additional narrative threads, hidden secrets, and more powerful loot.
The Desert Perpetual, a new raid, released four days after the expansion. Destiny 2's traditional seasonal model was also restructured starting with this release: rather than year-long expansions split into multiple seasons, Year 8 was divided into two large seasons, each opening with a mid-sized paid expansion followed by a free Major Update partway through, with Ash & Iron arriving as the first Major Update in September 2025.
