About DOOM II: Hell on Earth
DOOM II: Hell on Earth is a first-person shooter developed and published by id Software, released on October 10, 1994. It is the direct sequel to DOOM (1993) and the first game in the series to be sold through retail stores rather than the shareware model used by its predecessor. On Steam, it is currently sold as part of the DOOM + DOOM II bundle alongside the original game, Master Levels for DOOM II, SIGIL, and Legacy of Rust.
The story picks up after the events of the original game. The Doom Slayer has returned to Earth only to find it already overrun by Hell's forces. Humanity's remaining survivors attempt to evacuate via spaceships, but the only working starport is under demonic control. The marine fights his way through to disable the force field and allow the evacuation, before tracking the invasion back to its source and confronting the Icon of Sin, the final boss of the game, to seal the portal to Hell.
DOOM II does not reinvent what the original game built. The engine is the same, the core loop of navigating non-linear levels, collecting keys, and shooting enemies to reach the exit is intact, and there are no major graphical changes. What it does bring is more of everything. The 32 levels are larger and more complex than those in the original, with a greater variety of environments covering urban ruins, city streets, and hellscape interiors. Eight new enemy types are introduced, including the Revenant, the Arch-vile, the Mancubus, and the Pain Elemental, all of which have remained fixtures of the franchise in every entry since. The Super Shotgun, a double-barreled weapon that became one of the most iconic guns in shooter history, makes its debut here as the only new weapon added to the arsenal.
DOOM II has been the foundation of the classic Doom modding community for over three decades. The game's WAD format, its open level structure, and the variety of its enemy roster made it the preferred base for community map packs, total conversions, and standalone mod releases. The majority of classic Doom mods target DOOM II specifically, and the community around it remains active to this day.
The current Steam version is part of the DOOM + DOOM II bundle, which includes the Kex Engine re-release of both games with cross-platform online multiplayer for up to 16 players, mod support through an in-game browser, improved performance up to 4K, and a choice between the original MIDI soundtracks and the remastered IDKFA versions by Andrew Hulshult.
