About DOOM 3
DOOM 3 is a sci-fi horror first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Activision. It was originally released for Windows on August 3, 2004, with Linux and Mac OS X ports following later that year, and an Xbox version arriving on April 4, 2005. The game is a full reboot of the Doom franchise, ignoring the storylines of the previous games entirely.
Set in 2145 on Mars, the story follows the Union Aerospace Corporation's research facility, where experiments in teleportation, biological research, and advanced weapons design have been underway for years. A teleportation experiment overseen by Dr. Betruger inadvertently opens a gateway to Hell, unleashing a catastrophic demonic invasion across the facility. Players control an unnamed space marine fighting through the overrun base in an effort to survive and stop the invasion from reaching Earth.
DOOM 3 leans heavily into a horror atmosphere, a marked departure from the fast-paced run-and-gun design of the original Doom games. Much of the facility is intentionally dark, and the original release forces players to switch between weapons and a handheld flashlight rather than having both available simultaneously. Hundreds of text, audio, and video logs scattered throughout the base flesh out the story and background of the facility's staff. The game includes a minimal multiplayer mode, as id Software designed DOOM 3 to be remembered primarily for its single-player horror experience.
The Resurrection of Evil expansion, developed by Nerve Software and released April 4, 2005, adds twelve new single-player levels set two years after the original story, six new enemies including the Hunters, new weapons including the double-barreled shotgun and the physics-manipulating Grabber, and expanded multiplayer support for up to eight players with new modes including capture the flag.
DOOM 3: BFG Edition, released October 16, 2012, remasters the original game and its expansion with improved rendering and lighting, a new checkpoint save system, controller support, and an armor-mounted flashlight that lets players see and shoot at the same time. It also adds The Lost Mission, a new chapter of eight single-player levels built from content cut from the original release, along with embedded versions of the original DOOM (1993) and DOOM II. DOOM 3 holds a Metacritic score of 87 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

The current Steam listing bundles the original 2004 release of DOOM 3, the Resurrection of Evil expansion, and the remastered DOOM 3: BFG Edition all together in a single package.
No. DOOM 3 is a standalone reboot that ignores the events and continuity of the original Doom (1993) and Doom II (1994). It retells the core concept of a Mars facility overrun by demons with its own characters and story, independent from the earlier games.
Yes, though it is limited compared to other Doom titles. The original release includes a basic multiplayer mode, and the Resurrection of Evil expansion expands support to eight players with additional modes such as capture the flag. The developers designed the game primarily around its single-player horror campaign rather than competitive multiplayer.
The Lost Mission is an exclusive chapter included with DOOM 3: BFG Edition, featuring eight single-player levels built from content that was cut from the original 2004 release. It introduces a new storyline alongside the returning gameplay of the original campaign.
