About DragonSword: Awakening
Developed and published by Hound13 and released on July 22, 2026, DragonSword: Awakening has one of the most unusual origin stories in recent PC gaming. The game was originally designed as a free-to-play gacha live service title for mobile, but after a legal dispute with its previous publisher Webzen, Hound13 won back the rights to their own game and made a decision that has earned them enormous goodwill from players — they stripped out every gacha system, every microtransaction, every stamina gate, and every predatory monetisation mechanic, and released DragonSword: Awakening as a complete, self-contained premium PC game for $29.99. The result is a game that finally gets to be judged on its own merits, and those merits are considerable.
The story follows Lute, a golden-haired young boy travelling to the human kingdom of Orbis who stumbles into the lives of Johnny, a mercenary, and Castella, an Elf, just as a Dragon that ravaged the continent 60 years ago begins to stir again. To save Orbis, Lute must trace the footsteps of the six legendary Heroes who defeated the Dragon last time, uncovering the hidden truths of each — and discovering whether he himself can become the Dragon Sword, the hero the continent needs. The open world of Orbis is built on Unreal Engine 5 with warmly coloured fantasy environments spanning meadows, deep seas, hidden caves, watchtower dungeons, and more.
Combat is the game's mechanical centrepiece — a tag-team system where each of the 19 playable Heroes carries distinct Status Ailment abilities that can be stacked using Active Skills before being unleashed through powerful Signal Skills in devastating combo chains. Characters weave in and out of battle through Switching Signals, rewarding players who master the interactions between different Hero combinations.
DragonSword: Awakening launched to a Very Positive rating on Steam with 90% positive reviews across more than 5,700 players within days of release, praised for its combat depth, world-building, and the remarkable transformation from gacha cash-grab to honest premium game.

No. DragonSword: Awakening is a complete premium game with no gacha mechanics, no microtransactions, no stamina systems, and no paywalls of any kind. All 19 Heroes, gear, and progression are earned through playing the game itself. This was a deliberate decision by developer Hound13 after recovering the rights to their game from a previous publisher.
DragonSword: Awakening shares some surface similarities with Genshin Impact — an anime-style open world, a roster of unique characters with elemental abilities, and a tag-team combat system. However the two games are fundamentally different in their business model and design philosophy. DragonSword: Awakening is a complete paid single-player game with no gacha, no microtransactions, and no live service systems. Everything in the game is earned through gameplay rather than purchased or rolled for.
Yes. DragonSword: Awakening supports both single-player and co-operative multiplayer. The game can be completed entirely solo, but co-op allows players to team up with others for certain content.
No. DragonSword: Awakening is not currently available on Xbox Game Pass and is available on PC via Steam only. Purchasing a key is the only way to access the game.
