It is set in Norvinsk, a fictional region in northwestern Russia where two private military companies, USEC and BEAR, are locked in a conflict that has consumed the area.

The game's core loop is built around raids. Each session places the player on one of several maps populated by other players and AI-controlled scavengers called Scavs. The goal is to move through the map, collect loot, survive encounters, and reach one of the map's extraction points before the raid timer runs out. Being killed in a raid means losing all equipment brought into it that is not stored in a secure container, making every decision about loadout and engagement feel consequential.

Weapon customization is one of the game's defining features. Hundreds of real-world firearm parts can be combined to configure and modify weapons, with accurate ballistics, bullet penetration, and recoil behavior. A detailed health system tracks bleeding, fractures, dehydration, and other conditions, each requiring specific medical items to treat properly.

Between raids, players develop a Hideout, a personal base that can be upgraded over time to unlock crafting, passive bonuses, and utility options. The Flea Market provides a player-driven economy where gear and materials are bought and sold using in-game currencies. Trader reputation systems unlock higher-tier inventory options as players complete tasks for each faction.

Version 1.0 introduced a full story mode alongside the existing raid structure, completing the narrative thread developed throughout the game's lengthy beta period. Escape from Tarkov holds a Mixed rating on Steam.
