About Escape the Backrooms

Escape the Backrooms is a co-op horror exploration game developed by Fancy Games and Blackbird Interactive, published by Secret Mode. The game entered Steam Early Access on August 11, 2022, as a solo project by developer Fancy, who was inspired to make it after watching Kane Parsons' Backrooms Found Footage video. It reached its full 1.0 release on October 23, 2025, with console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S following on May 28, 2026, and a Nintendo Switch 2 port shortly after.

The game is based on the Backrooms, a fictional liminal space creepypasta that originated online and has since spawned an entire subgenre of horror media. Players begin in Level 0, a yellow, endlessly repeating office-style space, and work their way through more than 30 unique levels, each with its own layout, puzzles, and way out. Some levels are original creations, while others recreate specific locations and aesthetics from Kane Parsons' web series, including the Async organization that players effectively represent throughout.

Up to four players can explore together in online co-op using proximity voice chat, though every member of the team needs to reach the exit alive for the group to successfully escape. Hostile entities lurk throughout the levels, each with distinct behaviors and threats, and staying quiet near danger matters since the entities can hear players talking. A single-player option with a speedrun timer is also fully supported for players who prefer going it alone. Progression rewards return trips into the Backrooms with secret levels and multiple different endings, and a Nightmare Mode raises the stakes further by forcing a full restart on a single death.

The 1.0 launch consolidated years of Early Access updates into a single package, adding four new levels, graphics improvements, a non-linear level layout, and other refinements. The console releases include full cross-platform play with the PC version and complete content parity, alongside cosmetic additions like the Winter Wanderer and Chinese New Year items.
