About Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout: New Vegas is an action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released on October 19, 2010, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, under project director Josh Sawyer, a lead designer on the cancelled Fallout 3 project Van Buren at Black Isle Studios. Though it uses the same engine and much of the same assets as Fallout 3, New Vegas is not a direct sequel, developed on a tight 18-month schedule after Bethesda contracted Obsidian following Fallout 3's success.

Set in 2281, 204 years after the Great War devastated the world, the story follows a courier ambushed and left for dead in the Mojave Desert while delivering a mysterious package known as the Platinum Chip. Surviving the attempt on their life, the Courier sets out to track down their attacker and gets pulled into an escalating conflict between three major powers vying for control of the region: the democratic New California Republic, the brutal slaver-led Caesar's Legion, and Mr. House, the enigmatic ruler of New Vegas itself, operating from behind the walls of the Lucky 38 casino. Every major decision made throughout the game feeds into one of several possible endings, each culminating in the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, with the specific outcome shaped by the Courier's choices, faction standing, and companions.

The SPECIAL attribute system returns from earlier Fallout titles, directly influencing speech options and available quests, alongside a full trait system not present in Fallout 3. Perks are earned every two levels rather than every level, a deliberate change to keep player characters from becoming overpowered too quickly. Hardcore Mode is an optional setting adding realism through mechanics like dehydration, hunger, sleep deprivation, and non-instantaneous healing, toggleable at any point outside of achievement runs that require it enabled from start to finish.

New Vegas itself is filled with casinos and gambling minigames including blackjack, roulette, and slots, alongside Caravan, a card game created specifically for the game. A reputation and karma system tracks standing with the many factions scattered across the Mojave, with the game placing significantly more weight on faction relationships and quest consequences than the more open-ended, settlement-focused structure of later Bethesda-developed Fallout titles.

Four DLC expansions were developed by Obsidian following launch: Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road, each self-contained with its own setting, cast, and story, and a dialogue capped by Bethesda’s contractual limits. The game suffered from significant bugs, crashes, and stability issues at launch, criticized by both fans and reviewers despite widespread praise for its writing and quest design.

Fallout: New Vegas holds a Metacritic score of 84 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam. Fallout: New Vegas is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Xbox Game Pass Premium. If you are already a subscriber, you can access it directly through your membership. If you do not have Game Pass, GameBoost offers Xbox Game Pass gift cards as an alternative way to get started.
