The game is set in Valisthea, a dark fantasy world shaped by towering Mothercrystals whose aether sustains the kingdoms built around them. A spreading blight is destroying farmland and threatening those without access to aether, pushing the major powers toward conflict. At the center of this struggle are the Eikons, immensely powerful beings each embodied by a single human host known as a Dominant, who can summon and channel their power in battle.

The story follows Clive Rosfield, eldest son of the Archduke of Rosaria and sworn First Shield to his younger brother Joshua, the Dominant of the Phoenix. A catastrophic event during Clive's youth sets him on a path of vengeance and purpose that unfolds across decades, taking him through the courts, battlefields, and hidden underworld of Valisthea.

FINAL FANTASY XVI is the first mainline Final Fantasy title built around real-time action combat from the ground up. The system was directed by Ryota Suzuki, known for his work on Devil May Cry 5, and centers on combining Eikon abilities unlocked throughout the story with standard melee attacks and counters. Boss encounters against full Eikons are among the game's most cinematic set pieces, unfolding as large-scale battles with distinct mechanics across each phase.

Torgal, a wolf companion who travels with Clive, assists in combat and can be commanded to attack, heal, or rescue at any point. The game is single-player only. FINAL FANTASY XVI holds a Metacritic score of 87 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.
