It's the debut title from Campo Santo, a studio founded by veterans of games including The Walking Dead: Season 1.

Set in 1989, players control Henry, a man who takes a job as a fire lookout in the sprawling Wyoming wilderness following a period of personal turmoil, watching for smoke during an especially hot, dry summer that has everyone on edge. Henry's only meaningful connection to the outside world is Delilah, his supervisor, communicating through a small handheld radio from a separate lookout tower somewhere in the same wilderness. What begins as a fairly routine job takes a stranger turn when unusual events draw Henry out into the forest, unraveling a tense, unpredictable mystery whose exact shape depends heavily on the choices the player makes along the way.

The game's illustrated art direction was created by Olly Moss and Jane Ng, giving the wilderness a distinct, painterly look that stands apart from more photorealistic open-world games. The story and script were written by Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin, delivered through voice performances from Cissy Jones as Delilah and Rich Sommer as Henry, with an original score composed by Chris Remo. A single playthrough takes roughly four hours on average, structured as a tightly paced narrative experience rather than an open-ended sandbox.

Firewatch received widespread critical acclaim on release, earning six BAFTA nominations including Best Game, IGN's Adventure Game of the Year for 2016, and multiple Game Developers Choice Awards including Best Narrative. The game holds a Metacritic score of 81 and a Very Positive rating on Steam, based on over 92,000 user reviews.
