About Garry's Mod
Garry's Mod is a physics-based sandbox game developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve. Originally created by Garry Newman as a mod for Valve's Source engine in 2004, it was expanded into a standalone release on Steam on November 29, 2006, and has since sold over 20 million copies. macOS and Linux versions followed in 2010 and 2013, respectively. The base game has no objectives, story, or win conditions. Players are placed in a world built on Source engine physics where everything can be picked up, moved, welded, constrained, and reconfigured. The primary tools are the Phys Gun, which allows grabbing and positioning any object in the world, and the Tool Gun, which spawns items, attaches props together, sets physical constraints, and configures almost every aspect of an object's behavior. The spawn menu provides access to hundreds of props, ragdolls, NPCs, and vehicles drawn from Valve's catalogue of Source engine games.
Ragdoll and face posing tools let players create static scenes and screenshots. Lua scripting enables more advanced users to build their own game modes and add-ons from scratch.
Steam Workshop is the center of the game's long-term appeal. Thousands of community-made addons cover new props, weapons, maps, NPCs, vehicles, and complete game modes. Popular community modes include Trouble in Terrorist Town, a social deduction game involving hidden traitors, Prop Hunt, where players disguise as objects to avoid hunters, DarkRP, an open-ended roleplay mode, and many others. Multiplayer servers for each mode remain active across the player base. A spiritual successor called S&box was released by Facepunch Studios in April 2026.
