About Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on October 29, 2002, for PlayStation 2, with the PC version following on May 12, 2003. It's the fourth main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and a direct successor to Grand Theft Auto III, sharing the same engine while introducing an entirely new setting, protagonist, and 1980s aesthetic.
Set in 1986, the story follows Tommy Vercetti, recently released from a fifteen-year prison sentence, who is sent by his former boss Sonny Forelli to establish operations in Vice City, a fictionalized version of Miami. A drug deal orchestrated by the Forelli family goes badly wrong, leaving Tommy without the money or the drugs and determined to find out who set him up. What begins as a search for answers evolves into Tommy building his own criminal empire across the city, working with a wide cast of characters spanning bikers, Cuban and Haitian gangs, corrupt politicians, and Miami's own criminal underworld.
The open world of Vice City spans two main islands connected by bridges, giving players significant freedom to explore, complete missions, and cause chaos across the city as they see fit. The game introduced the ability to purchase and manage properties across the city, each generating passive income and unlocking additional side missions once owned. A soundtrack spanning multiple licensed radio stations covering genres from new wave to rock to Latin music became one of the defining features of the game's identity, deeply tied to the tone and atmosphere of its 1980s setting.
