It entered Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 28, 2020, and fully launched on September 27, 2022, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 versions followed on April 16, 2024.

Players take on the role of one of four teenagers: Max, Willow, Pete, or Hoops, who have been mysteriously shrunk to the size of an ant and left behind in a suburban backyard. On their new scale, the backyard is a vast and dangerous environment populated by insects and arachnids, shifting weather, and terrain that spans grass fields, garden beds, an oak tree, a pond, and a tool shed.

Survival requires managing hunger and thirst alongside the constant threat of insects. Resources gathered across the yard are used to craft weapons and armor scaled to the creatures encountered in each area. Base building allows players to construct and expand shelters using materials found throughout the yard. BURG.L, a robot science assistant discovered early in the game, serves as the main quest hub and a source of crafting upgrades.

A mutation system lets players unlock and equip passive abilities based on how they play, rewarding specific playstyles with relevant bonuses. Story progression involves recovering science labs scattered around the yard and uncovering the mystery behind the shrinking experiment and the organization responsible.

The game supports solo play and online co-op for up to four players. Grounded is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning a single purchase includes both the Xbox and PC versions via the Microsoft Store at no additional cost.

Grounded has a Metacritic score of 83, and its sequel, Grounded 2, launched in early access on July 29, 2025. Grounded is currently available on Xbox Game Pass.
