About Hello Neighbor
Hello Neighbor is a stealth horror game developed by Dynamic Pixels, now maintained by Eerie Guest Studios, and published by tinyBuild. It was released on December 8, 2017, for PC via Steam and Xbox One, with PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch following on July 26, 2018. Development began in 2014, and the game went through several public alpha builds before its full release, with the Pre-Alpha, Alpha 1, Alpha 2, Alpha 3, and Alpha 4 all made freely available and attracting significant attention before the full game launched.
The story follows Nicky Roth, a young boy who witnesses something disturbing happening at the house of his neighbor, Theodore Peterson. Unable to explain what he saw, Nicky decides to break into the house and find out what Peterson is hiding in the basement. The game unfolds across three acts, each set at a different point in time as the mystery surrounding Peterson and what happened in his home deepens.
The AI-driven neighbor is the game's central mechanic and primary selling point. Peterson observes and reacts to the player's behavior between attempts, setting bear traps along routes previously used, placing cameras above doors the player has opened repeatedly, and finding shortcuts to cut off escape paths that worked in earlier runs. Each attempt teaches the neighbor something new, making previously successful approaches less effective over time and pushing the player to find new ways into the house.
Gameplay is built around exploration, physics interaction, and puzzle-solving across Peterson's house and its surrounding environment. Objects can be picked up, moved, and used to reach otherwise inaccessible areas or distract the neighbor. The house itself grows in complexity across the three acts, adding new rooms, floors, and puzzles as the story progresses.
Hello Neighbor spawned a full franchise, including a prequel, Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek (2018), a multiplayer spin-off, Secret Neighbor (2019), a sequel, Hello Neighbor 2 (2022), and Hello Neighbor 3, which entered Pre-Alpha on Steam in April 2026. The series has been played by over 40 million people across all entries.

The neighbor learns from the player's previous attempts. If you repeatedly use the same entry point, he will set traps there. If you use the same door often, expect cameras. If you have a reliable escape route, he will find a faster way to intercept you. Each failed attempt changes how he responds in the next run, requiring players to adapt their approach rather than repeat the same strategy.
The game is rated PEGI 7, making it suitable for older children and families. The horror elements are presented in a cartoonish, non-graphic style, and the game avoids explicit violence or disturbing content while still maintaining a tense and suspenseful atmosphere.
The full game contains three acts plus a finale, each set at a different point in the story. Act 1 functions as a tutorial-style introduction. Acts 2 and 3 introduce increasingly complex versions of Peterson's house with new areas, puzzles, and story revelations.
Yes. Hello Neighbor is the first entry in a broader franchise. Hello Neighbor 2 is a direct sequel set after the events of the first game's second act. Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek is a prequel covering events in Peterson's past. Each game can be played independently, though playing in order adds more context to the overall story.
