About High on Life
High on Life is a comedic first-person shooter with action-adventure and Metroidvania elements developed and published by Squanch Games. It was released on December 13, 2022, for PC via Steam, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions following on July 22, 2023.
The game follows a recent high school graduate with no direction whose life is upended when the G3 Cartel, an alien crime organization, invades Earth with plans to process humanity as a drug. A talking alien gun named Kenny convinces the player to take the fight back, and the main story involves becoming a bounty hunter tracking down and eliminating the cartel's leadership one target at a time.
Combat is built around the Gatlians, five sentient alien guns that speak constantly throughout the game. Each Gatlian has a distinct personality and their own running commentary on events, alongside unique firing modes. Primary fire covers the weapon's main attack, while alternate and special modes provide additional options per gun. Knifey, a sentient melee weapon, can extend a tether to swing between platforms and attach to ziplines, functioning as the primary traversal tool across the game's environments.
The world uses Metroidvania-style design: new weapons and abilities gradually open access to previously blocked areas, and returning to earlier locations with new tools reveals hidden items and optional content. Each bounty target operates from their own distinct lair with a boss encounter that draws on the mechanics acquired up to that point.
A DLC expansion called High on Knife is available separately, focusing on Knifey in a standalone story adventure. A sequel, High on Life 2, was released on February 13, 2026.
