About Life is Strange
Life is Strange is an episodic adventure game developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Square Enix. It was announced at Gamescom on August 11, 2014, and released in five episodes between January 30 and October 20, 2015, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One, with Mac and Linux ports following later. Development began in April 2013 with a small team of fifteen people, growing to around forty once Square Enix stepped in to support production the following year.
Max Caulfield returns to her hometown of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, after years away, enrolling as a senior photography student at Blackwell Academy. During a violent altercation in the school bathroom, Max discovers she has the ability to rewind time, using it to save her childhood best friend Chloe Price from being shot. Reunited, the two set out to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Amber, a fellow student, uncovering a darker side to Arcadia Bay and the people in it along the way. The story unfolds through five episodes, with player choices, both large and small, shaping how events play out and rippling forward through what the developers describe as a butterfly effect running through the narrative.
The rewind mechanic sits at the heart of the game's design, letting players undo recent actions and dialogue choices to explore different outcomes before settling on a final decision. Not every consequence can be avoided this way, and the game deliberately builds toward moments where Max's power can't undo everything, tying directly into its central themes about growing up, choice, and the cost of trying to control outcomes that can't always be controlled. The hand-painted visual style, developed with an "impressionistic rendering" approach according to art director Michel Koch, and an acclaimed folk-driven soundtrack composed by Jonathan Morali both became defining elements of the game's identity.
Life is Strange won multiple Game of the Year awards and nominations across outlets, including Destructoid, PlayStation Blog, and the Develop Industry Excellence Awards, and holds a Metacritic score of 85. The game's success established Dontnod Entertainment as a prominent narrative-focused studio and launched a broader Life is Strange franchise, including a prequel, a direct sequel, and later entries developed by Deck Nine Games.
