Marvel’s Avengers begins at A-Day, where Captain America, Iron Man, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Thor are unveiling a new, hi-tech Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. The celebration turns deadly when a mysterious enemy causes a catastrophic accident which results in massive devastation. Blamed for the tragedy, the Avengers disband. Five years later, with all Super Heroes outlawed and the world in peril, a sprawling adventure ignites when a determined young woman named Kamala Khan sets out to reassemble and rebuild the Avengers to stop the unchecked power of the secretive new force known as AIM.

The story begins during A-Day, when Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, and the Hulk unveil a new Avengers headquarters in San Francisco. The celebration ends in catastrophe after an attack causes widespread destruction, leading the public to blame the Avengers and forcing the team to disband.
Five years later, superheroes have been outlawed, and the technology organization AIM has gained influence under the promise of protecting society. Kamala Khan discovers evidence that the Avengers may have been framed and begins a journey to reunite the team, expose AIM’s actions, and prevent a greater threat from spreading.
Each hero approaches combat differently and has abilities inspired by their individual powers. Iron Man can fly and attack enemies from range; the Hulk relies on strength and environmental destruction, while Black Widow uses speed, gadgets, and close-range techniques to control encounters.
Progression allows you to unlock new abilities, improve equipment, and shape each hero around a preferred playstyle. Adjustable difficulty, skill trees, gear bonuses, and cosmetic customization provide several ways to personalize the roster while completing campaign missions and repeatable activities.
The main Reassemble campaign is designed as a story-driven single-player experience. Hero Missions continue individual storylines, while Warzone Missions can be completed alone or through online cooperation with a Strike Team of up to four players.
Post-launch Operations expand the story beyond the original campaign with additional playable heroes, missions, regions, and enemies. These adventures take the Avengers to locations such as Wakanda and into alternate futures threatened by increasingly dangerous forces.
Marvel’s Avengers received its additional gameplay heroes and story missions through free updates rather than conventional paid expansion packs. Once the game has been activated, installed, and fully updated through Steam, owners can access the released gameplay content included with its final version.
The final content update also unlocked nearly all outfits, Emotes, Takedowns, and Nameplates that had previously been connected to the Marketplace, Shipments, or Hero Challenge Cards. Items linked to campaign progression or the Cosmetic Vendor must still be earned through their original methods.
Marvel’s Avengers is no longer available for direct purchase from Steam because official development and support ended in September 2023. Existing owners retain access, and Crystal Dynamics stated that both the single-player and multiplayer portions would remain playable after support ended.
