About The Desolation of Mordor
The Desolation of Mordor is a story expansion for Middle-earth: Shadow of War starring Baranor, Captain of the Tower from Minas Ithil. His campaign takes him deep behind enemy lines, where he must establish a new resistance force and weaken Sauron’s control over the eastern deserts of Mordor.
Unlike Talion, Baranor has no Ring of Power or supernatural abilities to protect him from defeat. He relies on military experience, equipment, leadership, and careful preparation as he takes on Orc forces across a hostile new region.
The expansion introduces Lithlad, a desert area filled with enemy camps, fortifications, wilderness threats, and new objectives. Its open environment provides a different setting from the regions featured in the main campaign, with scorching landscapes and dangers unique to the eastern reaches of Mordor.
Baranor can recruit human mercenaries and assign them as bodyguards, creating a fighting force built around loyalty, planning, and battlefield coordination. These soldiers support him during missions and large encounters, helping him challenge stronger Orc commanders and fortified positions.
The campaign also reunites Baranor with Torvin, the Dwarven hunter known from earlier Middle-earth adventures. Torvin has travelled into the desert while pursuing the legendary Were-wyrms, introducing new missions and dangerous creatures to the story.
Baranor uses a distinct collection of skills and abilities suited to a human commander. His combat style emphasizes weapons, gadgets, movement, and tactical leadership rather than domination or supernatural powers.
The Desolation of Mordor includes a dedicated story campaign and new side missions that expand Baranor’s role after the fall of Minas Ithil. Players must raise an Easterling army and create a new front in the Shadow War while surviving far from Talion’s influence.
The expansion offers a different perspective on the conflict in Mordor by focusing on a mortal hero who must depend on preparation and allies. Its new region, mercenary system, enemies, and campaign provide a separate experience while remaining connected to the wider Shadow of War story.
The Desolation of Mordor is a strong choice for players who want a new playable character, human followers, desert exploration, fresh missions, and a more tactical campaign without the powers of the New Ring.
