What is a Root in League of Legends?

A root in League of Legends is a powerful crowd control that locks a champion in place: they can't walk, dash, blink or Flash until it ends. Rooted champions can still auto attack, cast abilities that don't move them and use items. Some players refer to the root as snare.
What Does a Root Do in LoL?
When a champion is rooted, they cannot control their movement or activate any movement spells. This includes basic movement commands, dashes, blinks, and even summoner spells like Flash or Teleport. However, rooted units can still be displaced by other abilities or effects, meaning they aren't entirely immune to positional changes.
Action | While rooted |
|---|---|
Walking (right-click movement) | Blocked |
Dashes and blinks | Blocked |
Blocked | |
Recall | Interrupted |
Auto attacks on targets already in range | Allowed |
Abilities that don't move you | Allowed |
Item actives, Cleanse, Quicksilver Sash | Allowed |
It's crucial to note that while rooted, champions can still perform other actions. They can attack, cast non-movement spells, use items, and activate abilities that don't involve movement. This distinction sets root apart from more severe crowd control effects like stuns or silences.

Can You Flash While Rooted in LoL?
No. Root disables Flash, Teleport, Hexflash and every dash or blink until it ends. Cleanse still works, so it's the summoner spell that gets you out.
The habit to build is Flashing before the root lands. Once a Morgana Q connects, your Flash stays locked for up to 3 seconds, so the best counter is often standing behind the wave and baiting the cooldown.
Root vs Snare: Is There a Difference?
No. Snare is the older name for the same effect. Ability tooltips and the official wiki now say root, but older guides and Reddit threads still use snare, and so do some players in chat.
Is Root Hard CC?
Yes. The League wiki groups root with immobilizing effects, which players call hard CC. It's the lightest hard CC, though, because you keep your attacks and spells.
Effect | Move | Attack | Cast | Hard or soft | Tenacity reduces it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Slow | Slower | Yes | Yes | Soft | Yes |
Root | No | Yes | Yes (no movement spells) | Hard | Yes |
No | No | No | Hard | Yes | |
No | No | No | Hard | No |
Champions with Root Abilities
A wide variety of champions in League of Legends possess abilities that can root enemies. These champions span different roles and playstyles, offering diverse ways to apply this crowd control effect. Some examples of root champions include:
Lux: Her Light Binding ability can root up to two enemies in a line.
Morgana: Dark Binding roots a single target for a potentially long duration.
Ryze: His Rune Prison provides a point-and-click root.
Maokai: Nature's Grasp creates a large area of rooting vines.
Jinx: Flame Chompers form a line of traps that root enemies who trigger them.
Each of these abilities applies root in unique ways, adding depth to champion kits and team compositions. Some roots are skill shots that require precise aim, while others are point-and-click abilities or area-of-effect spells that can potentially root multiple targets.
How to Counter Roots in LoL?
Success in League of Legends hinges on understanding how to play around root effects.
Cleanse: The summoner spell removes a root instantly and works while you're rooted.
Quicksilver Sash and Mikael's Blessing: QSS removes it from yourself. Mikael's lets a support remove it from you.
Tenacity: Cuts the duration by its value. With 30% Tenacity, Morgana's 3-second root lasts 2.1 seconds.
Champion tools: Dr. Mundo's passive, Goes Where He Pleases, resists the next immobilizing effect. Olaf's Ragnarok and Gangplank's Remove Scurvy remove CC on demand.
Minion cover: Morgana's Q stops on the first enemy it hits, so one minion in the way blocks it. Lux's Q needs two.
Equally important is positioning, awareness, and game sense to avoid root abilities altogether. By being mindful of enemy champions with root abilities and their cooldowns, players can bait these skills or force suboptimal usage, creating opportunities for aggressive plays.
