About Noita
Noita is a magical action roguelite developed and published by Nolla Games, a Helsinki-based independent studio formed by Petri Purho, Olli Harjola, and Arvi Teikari, known individually for Crayon Physics Deluxe, The Swapper, and Baba Is You. The game entered Steam Early Access on September 24, 2019, and left Early Access as version 1.0 on October 15, 2020. It draws inspiration from the 1998 artillery game Liero, falling-sand games, and modern roguelikes.
The game's defining feature is its Falling Everything Engine, a physics system that simulates every single pixel on screen. Fire spreads through terrain, liquids like lava and acid interact with whatever they touch, and destructible environments mean almost nothing on screen is fixed in place. Players explore a procedurally generated world through a series of biomes, including Mines, Coal Pits, Snowy Depths, Hiisi Base, Underground Jungle, The Vault, Temple of the Art, and The Laboratory, each holding stronger enemies and better rewards than the last. Holy Mountains sit between biomes as safe zones for editing wands, buying new spells, and picking perks that reshape how a run plays out.
Spellcasting is built around customizable wands loaded with spells that combine in often unpredictable ways. Many of the game's most powerful spells are just as dangerous to the caster as to enemies, and the community has coined the term "Noita'd" for deaths that feel especially unfair or unexpected. Permadeath applies for the entire run, though some unlocks carry over permanently between attempts. The main path ends in The Laboratory, where the boss Kolmisilmä guards the Sampo, an item that either ends the run or starts a New Game+ depending on the player's choices.
The game supports extensive modding, ranging from small gameplay tweaks like new spells to entirely separate modes. Nightmare Mode, unlocked after beating the game once, and a built-in Twitch integration letting stream viewers vote on in-game events are both included as official mod-like features. The Epilogue Update in March 2021 and the Epilogue 2 Update in April 2024 added further content and quality-of-life changes after the base game's launch. Noita holds a Metacritic score of 76 and an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam.

Enemies can kill the player in a single hit even early in a run, and many of the game's spells are just as dangerous to cast as they are to use against enemies. Death is permanent for that run, though the player carries forward knowledge and some permanent unlocks, which is a core part of the game's design.
Yes. Noita has an active modding scene covering everything from small gameplay tweaks and new spells to entirely separate game modes. Some mods, like Nightmare Mode and Twitch integration, are built directly into the base game.
Nightmare Mode is a harder difficulty setting that unlocks automatically after completing the game once. It's built directly into the base game rather than requiring a separate mod or download.
The Sampo is an item found in the game's final biome, The Laboratory, guarded by the boss Kolmisilmä. Picking it up either ends the current run or starts a New Game+, depending on choices made earlier, and its name changes based on how many Orbs of True Knowledge the player has collected.
