OCTOPATH TRAVELER II is a turn-based JRPG developed by Square Enix and Acquire and published by Square Enix. It was released on February 24, 2023, for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions arriving in June 2024. It is a standalone sequel to Octopath Traveler (2018), the third entry in the series overall following the mobile prequel Champions of the Continent, though it features an entirely new cast and setting unconnected to the previous games.
The story is set in Solistia, a land split between an eastern and western continent divided by the sea, during an era resembling the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries as steam power and industrial technology begin to take hold. Eight travelers, each pursuing their own goals, set out from different corners of the world. Ochette, a hunter, tracks down three legendary beasts to prevent a foretold calamity. Castti, an amnesiac apothecary, retraces her past and confronts the colleague responsible for poisoning a village. Throné, a thief tied to an assassins' guild, seeks freedom from her captors. Osvald, a scholar, plots his escape from imprisonment. Partitio, a merchant, fights to bring the benefits of new technology to the poor. Agnea, a dancer, chases stardom in honor of her late mother. Temenos, a cleric, investigates a murder within his own order. Hikari, an exiled prince, gathers allies to reclaim his throne. Players choose one traveler to begin with and can recruit the remaining seven along the way, with special Crossed Paths chapters unlocking when specific pairs of travelers cross paths.
Combat carries over the turn-based Break and Boost system from the original game, where landing hits against an enemy's specific weaknesses depletes a shield gauge and triggers a Break state, leaving them unable to act. Boost Points let characters chain multiple actions or amplify a single attack within the same turn. New to the sequel is Latent Power, a gauge that fills as damage is dealt and enemies are broken, unlocking a character-specific ability once full. Each traveler also retains their own set of Path Actions for interacting with NPCs in towns, and a new Day and Night cycle changes which Path Actions are available, what enemies appear, and where NPCs can be found depending on the time of day.
