About OCTOPATH TRAVELER
OCTOPATH TRAVELER is a turn-based JRPG developed by Square Enix in collaboration with Acquire. It was first announced in January 2017 under the working title Project Octopath Traveler, led by producers Masashi Takahashi and Tomoya Asano, previously known for Bravely Default and Bravely Second. The game was released for Nintendo Switch in July 2018 before arriving on PC via Steam on June 7, 2019.
Players begin by choosing one of eight protagonists, each starting their journey in a different part of the world of Orsterra. Ophilia the Cleric, Cyrus the Scholar, Tressa the Merchant, Olberic the Warrior, Primrose the Dancer, Alfyn the Apothecary, Therion the Thief, and H'aanit the Hunter each carry a personal story split into four chapters. Once chosen, a protagonist stays locked into the active party until their arc concludes. The remaining seven characters can be recruited at their own starting locations and brought into the party at any time.
Every character has a fixed class tied to their role, but a subjob system lets any character take on the class of another, opening up flexible party builds beyond what their default job allows. Combat runs on a turn-based Break and Boost system, where landing hits against an enemy's weaknesses depletes a shield gauge and leaves them unable to act once broken. Boost Points let a character store up extra actions to chain attacks or amplify a single hit within a turn, giving players control over pacing and burst damage in tougher fights.
The HD-2D visual style, developed specifically for this game, combines retro Super NES-era character sprites with polygonal 3D environments and modern lighting effects, a look Square Enix has since carried into other titles including Triangle Strategy and the Live A Live remake. The eight protagonists later appeared as optional bosses in Octopath Traveler II through a June 2024 update, and Galdera, the original game's final boss, remains a hidden superboss in the sequel as well. OCTOPATH TRAVELER holds a Metacritic score of 80 and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

Playing the original first isn't required. Octopath Traveler II is a fully standalone sequel with a new cast and setting. That said, this game is where the HD-2D style and the Break and Boost combat system started, and the eight travelers here later appear as optional post-game bosses in the sequel, which lands better with context from the first game.
