Description

Hell is an experiment you can't survive in Outlast, a first-person survival horror game developed by veterans of some of the biggest game franchises in history. As investigative journalist Miles Upshur, explore Mount Massive Asylum and try to survive long enough to discover its terrible secret... if you dare.

Synopsis:

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Acting on a tip from an anonymous source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Outlast is a true survival horror experience which aims to show that the most terrifying monsters of all come from the human mind.

Features:

  • True Survival Horror Experience: You are no fighter - if you want to survive the horrors of the asylum, your only chance is to run... or hide
  • Immersive Graphics: AAA-quality graphics give players a detailed, terrifying world to explore
  • Hide and Sneak: Stealth-based gameplay, with parkour-inspired platforming elements
  • Unpredictable Enemies: Players cannot know when - and from where - one of the asylum’s terrifying inhabitants will finally catch up to them
  • Real Horror: Outlast’s setting and characters are inspired by real asylums and cases of criminal insanity

Warning:

Outlast contains intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language. Please enjoy.

About Outlast

Outlast is a first-person psychological survival horror game developed and published by Red Barrels, a Canadian independent studio. It was released on September 4, 2013, for PC via Steam, with PlayStation 4 following on February 6, 2014, Xbox One on June 19, 2014, and Linux, macOS, and Nintendo Switch ports arriving over the following years. It marks the studio's debut title, built on Unreal Engine 3.

Miles Upshur, a freelance investigative journalist, receives a tip about disturbing activity at Mount Massive Asylum, a remote and long-abandoned facility for the mentally ill deep in the Colorado mountains, recently reopened in secrecy by the research and charity branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation. Armed with only a video camera, Miles infiltrates the asylum, quickly discovering that the "patients" inside have been transformed into deranged, violent Variants through disturbing experimentation. With no combat options available, survival depends entirely on stealth, hiding, and running from the asylum's inhabitants, with the camera's night vision mode serving as the only tool to navigate the building's darker corners, at the cost of battery life.

Inspired by real asylums and documented cases of criminal insanity, the game leans into a grounded sense of horror grounded in human cruelty rather than purely supernatural threats. The original PC version featured mouse-swipe quick-time events for escaping enemy grabs, a system later adjusted in subsequent updates. A direct prequel and epilogue to the story, Outlast: Whistleblower, released as downloadable content on May 6, 2014, following Waylon Park, a Murkoff whistleblower whose actions set the events of the main game in motion.

Outlast received generally positive reviews at launch, with praise directed at its atmosphere and overall horror design, and has since built a player base of over 37 million as of October 2024. A sequel, Outlast 2, was released April 25, 2017, and a prequel focused on cooperative multiplayer, The Outlast Trials, was released March 5, 2024. Outlast holds a Metacritic score of 80.
