About Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 Royal is a role-playing and social simulation game developed by P-Studio and published by Sega. It is an enhanced re-release of Persona 5 (2016), originally launching on PlayStation 4 in Japan on October 31, 2019, and worldwide on March 31, 2020. The PC version, ported by a team at Sega, was released on Steam and the Microsoft Store on October 21, 2022, alongside versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
The story follows Joker, a high school student forced to transfer to Shujin Academy in Tokyo after being falsely accused of assault. He discovers the ability to summon Personas, manifestations of inner psyche used to battle Shadows inside Palaces, distorted realms born from the twisted desires of corrupt adults. Alongside a growing group of fellow Phantom Thieves, Joker sets out to infiltrate these Palaces and steal the source of each target's corruption, forcing a change of heart and a public confession.
Gameplay alternates between turn-based dungeon exploration inside Palaces and a calendar-based social simulation layer in the everyday world. Confidant relationships built with other characters provide story content and gameplay bonuses tied to the protagonist's social stats. Persona fusion allows players to combine captured Personas into new and more powerful forms, supporting a wide range of build strategies in combat.
Royal adds substantial new content over the base Persona 5 release. Two new playable-adjacent characters, Kasumi Yoshizawa and counselor Takuto Maruki, are introduced, along with a new third semester that extends the story past the original game's ending with an entirely new arc and final boss. Additional Palace content, new Confidants, the Thieves Den hideout, and a Grappling Hook traversal mechanic round out the new additions.
