About Project Zomboid
Project Zomboid is an open-world isometric zombie survival RPG developed and published by The Indie Stone, a small independent studio based in the United Kingdom and Canada. The game entered Steam Early Access on November 8, 2013, and has received consistent updates ever since, growing from a small survival game into one of the most detailed zombie survival experiences available on PC. A full 1.0 release remains planned, with no confirmed date.
The game is set in Knox Country, a fictional region based loosely on the Louisville metropolitan area in Kentucky, in 1993. A government quarantine has been established following an outbreak of the Knox Infection, a zombie plague whose exact origin is left deliberately unexplained and conveyed through fragmented in-game radio broadcasts and television news segments. The world operates on its own internal timeline, with power and water supplies shutting down within the first month of a playthrough, forcing survivors to find alternative sources of electricity and clean water as the environment becomes progressively more desolate.
Character creation involves selecting an occupation and a combination of positive and negative traits that shape the starting skill profile and playstyle. Dozens of skills cover physical abilities, crafting professions, weapon handling, and survival techniques, each developing through active use over time. Hunger, thirst, fatigue, boredom, stress, and illness are all tracked as separate needs, and neglecting any of them has compounding negative effects on a character's ability to function. Injury and infection carry their own management systems, with a zombie bite being a near-certain death sentence through infection rather than immediate incapacitation.
The open world supports looting, base construction, farming, fishing, cooking, carpentry, electrical work, metalworking, and mechanics, giving players a broad toolkit for building sustainable long-term survival setups. Vehicles can be found, repaired, and driven across the map. The sandbox mode lets players customize every major variable of a playthrough, including zombie population density, respawn behavior, loot rarity, and the speed at which the world deteriorates, across thirteen distinct preset game modes or a fully custom configuration.
Build 41 introduced a complete overhaul of the animation and combat systems alongside a revamped multiplayer mode supporting dedicated servers for online co-op and PvP. Build 42, released in December 2024, added animals, hunting, a substantially expanded crafting system, new underground locations, and a range of gameplay additions. The Steam Workshop supports a large library of community-made mods covering everything from interface adjustments to full map expansions and total gameplay overhauls. Project Zomboid holds a Very Positive rating on Steam with over 150,000 reviews.

Yes. Project Zomboid has extensive Steam Workshop support with a large library of community-made mods. These range from small interface and balance tweaks to full map expansions, new mechanics, and total conversion mods that substantially change the base game.
Death is permanent. When a character dies, that playthrough ends, and a new character must be started from scratch. There is no way to save-scum or reload from a previous save after death, though server settings can be configured to allow respawning in multiplayer. The game is designed around the inevitability of death, with the challenge being to survive for as long as possible rather than to reach a specific ending.
