The game begins with a small group of crash survivors stranded on a distant world at the edge of known space. Players build and expand a colony from nothing, managing resources, construction, food production, and the wellbeing of each individual colonist. Every colonist has their own traits, backstory, skills, relationships, and mental state, all of which affect how they perform and behave under pressure.

At the center of the experience is the AI storyteller system. Players choose a storyteller before starting a run. Cassandra Classic escalates difficulty steadily over time, Randy Random throws unpredictable events at the player without pattern, and Phoebe Chillax keeps things calmer for players who prefer to build at their own pace. Every raid, storm, disease outbreak, trade caravan, and random event is generated by the storyteller to weave a unique narrative across each playthrough.

Gameplay systems run deep across every aspect of colony life. Colonists develop romantic relationships, suffer from addiction, lose limbs, and can recover with prosthetics, bionics, or harvested organs. Players tame animals, craft weapons and apparel from a wide range of materials, engage in tactical combat against raiding parties, and trade with ships and caravans. Multiple biomes from desert to tundra shape how each colony develops and what threats it faces.
