About Rust

Players spawn on an island with only a rock and a torch. The only objective is to survive. Resources including stone, wood, metal ore, and sulfur are gathered from the environment and used to craft progressively better tools, weapons, and armor through a workbench blueprint system. Early survival means managing hunger, thirst, and cold while gathering enough materials to build any form of shelter. As a base grows, it can be fortified with doors, locks, traps, and auto turrets to protect what is stored inside.

Other players are the primary threat throughout the game. Rust places no separation between hostile and friendly players. Anyone can attack, raid, and steal from anyone else at any time, and base raiding using explosives and breach tools is a central part of mid and late-gameplay. Alliances form and collapse, and rebuilding after a raid is a normal part of the cycle for most players.

Wildlife, including bears, wolves, boars, and sharks, adds environmental pressure alongside NPC helicopter patrols and armored personal carriers that roam the map and attack armed players. Official servers run on a monthly wipe cycle, resetting all progress and structures.

Softcore Mode for a less punishing experience was added in early 2021. Hardcore Mode for a more demanding ruleset was followed in September 2022. Both are available as server options alongside the standard ruleset. Rust holds a Very Positive rating on Steam.
